When the committee made a recommendation to do the best it could to "balance" lines...the county parents were in an uproar over TOO MANY students being moved (they don't realize how much of the student population would need to move to make things work)! 28% movement was not acceptable was the cry. Also, parents from various neighborhoods WERE NOT GOING TO ACCEPT moving to a different school, have their children "orphaned" to a different elementary school than the friends they grew up with. The county then adjusts between 34-36 out of 38 of the recommendations by the community - based on the December 3 Open Forum. In return, they were criticized by the community for making changes the committee did not authorize. Even further, the BOE is criticized for not taking Maps A or B, but in their estimation took the best of A and the best of B and had the county redo the maps (hence maps A/B and B/A). In return, they are accused of not accepting what the committee worked so hard to create: as if they were suppose to take what the committee offered as "advice". In the end, the Board and the County (Sweat, Campbell, etc.) are in a no win situation....no matter what they do: have a private committee, have an open committee, choose map A, B, A/B, B/A, etc. It is amazing that parents are professional criticizers and offer "solutions" that are sooooooo much better than what the committee offered (after nearly 1,000 man hours) or what the County would create (who have all the road maps, NPUs, 5 year projections from Kelly Carey, etc.). I find it so amazing that those with condemnatory opinions do not run for office and be true leaders. To those who offer criticism and WORK WITH our county leaders (via letters, going to meetings, speaking publicly to achieve a positive effect), good for you. To those who only shout out condemnation but NEVER do anything to make things better, shame on you... you bring NOTHING to the table.

The redistricting process has gone for over 6 months, cost the taxpayers over 50K dollars, gotten expert unbiased, objective plans, and had several weeks of public review, for what....to find out that all have been scrapped for last minute plan (BA) ...submitted late Thursday (13th) for approval 2 business days later. Then reported by the Citizen to be available hopefully by end of week (Friday 21st). Maybe the lawyers representing Highgrove and Whitewater Creek convinced the BOE that 50K was enough money to throw away on this fiasco and not to push their luck. Moving these two large neighborhoods was going to alleviate the overcrowding at Peeple's Elem. How do the numbers look now, BOE?? Sorry kids, it's back to the trailers and a new subdivision going in across the parking lot to boot. The beat goes on....just follow the money.

Fayette County deserves better, much, much better.
It is time to demand change in the School Board,
and not at election time... before election time, NOW.
This is a total abuse of authority and I am ashamed to
live in a county where such behavior is becoming the norm.
If we let it quietly happen, without voices being heard,
then we are all guilty also.

How could the board be doing a good or okay job as some of our schools (elementary/middle/high) have trailers (they like to call them portable classrooms) and some of the schools in our county have a few "open" classrooms? These "open" classrooms are used as some sort of storage!!! WHAT!!!!!! Move students from overcrowded schools to schools which are less populated, PERIOD!!!! In some instances, this might mean moving one neighborhood and in other areas it might mean involving a larger area, causing some children to move outside of their city limits (McIntosh).
If the parents don't like it, they have the option to move or have their children attend a private school. GROW UP YOU CRY BABIES!!! What are our children going to do when they become adults and their employer moves them or closes down all together? Run home and cry to their parents?? This is life and the real world. People move, schools change all the time. The board needs to make decisions based on the schools we have, try not to spend EXTRA money on trailers and tell these whiners to suck it up and grow up!!!! All the whining parents are setting very bad examples for their children and not teaching them how to deal with adversity. Some of these parents get an “F” along with the board!!!

The board did an ok job with what/who they had to work with.

I said from the beginning (last spring) the school board would do what certain developers want. Of course they can not sell their big $ houses in the Whitewater district. I personally wonder why there is so much hatred towards the Minter/Whitewater schools/parents/kids.

I don't thinks its the kids or parents at these schools it's that the numbers will be high at other schools, and if there is so much room at other schools then the board could move small amounts of kids to help even out the numbers and not crowd certain schools. All the schools in the county and this area that the kids could be moved around too are good so there just needs to be a fairness to the process that has been clouded.

Maybe the person logging on as Leanne will answer why she fought so hard not to go to Minter. You will probably hear the usual "not in my community" blah blah blah. I would love to know what it is. I once heard because Minter is ranked 116 on the GA report card, but Braelinn is 111 and they were willing to go there, so that is not a valid answer. I hope someone will say what is is! Why does the board care what the developers want?

First of all dear, as I have already pointed out, my kids are at Braelinn and would have been forced to Peeples under one of the maps if Whitewater Creek had been moved to Minter. I have watched these meetings from the get go as I am a long time resident of the community; and it was all messed up by everyone involved. I respect the committee members for their time involved, but there was certainly no balance in their maps and there were quite a few reps who were making the best situation for themselves, not the whole community. I see a lot of false statements posted on these comments, I believe that truth is what is best and unless you are absolutely sure about what you are stating, find the facts.

The committee gave the board 2 viable maps, the board shred them to play favorites. The committee's maps were balanced, the board's are so uneven. If you handed in the board's map for a grade in a class on how to give equal distribution of #'s they would get an F. These maps show the county that if you got $ you can have what you want. If you are lower income - too bad! It made my future vote for board members so easy.

That's all I'm concerned with anyhow. All of the cryin' and fightin' is typical of those folks anyway.

Submitted by hopeful on Wed, 12/19/2007 - 6:30pm.

It is good that it will be open for one more year, but don't we need to worry about the future of each of the schools and let the board know that we want all school to have equal attendence not one with lots of room to grow and others busting out of the space they have just to make the $$$ neighborhoods happy.

Submitted by hopeful on Wed, 12/19/2007 - 4:10pm.

Money talks that was loud and clear the other night. To bad for the children that will be left at SpringHill, Peeples, etc..... That will be so crowded. Lucky for Minter they get to keep there numbers down, how fair is that? Not!!!!! The board needs to think or NONE of them will be there after next years election. At this point I would like to see them all out, the main reason when East Fayette was proposed to be closed and that was not what the committee was ask to do , they should have moved on to equal distribution of the schools and not let the East Fayette issue get to the point it has.
