When the public thinks of teens the first thoughts that often come to mind are vandalism, violence, and illegal activities. Unfortunately, teens are only being recognized for their faults rather that their achievements. The students at Whitewater High School have risen above this stereotype and have accomplished a task that few adults can say they have done. The youth were asked to bring money into their first period classes for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program at an assembly in the fall. They're told that the money raised would to kids fighting leukemia and lymphoma cancer. One of the student's biggest motivators was J.J. Campbell. During the assembly, Campbell and his mother shared his daily struggles with cancer which resulted in the students hearts being forever changed. There is not one student at Whitewater who would not consider J.J. as a part of the school family and a hero. Thanks to the inspiration of J.J. and the motivation of the students and faculty at Whitewater, the school was able to raise an unthinkable $21,009.87 for this campaign. All of the homerooms would like to give a huge thank you to all those in the community who helped support their efforts. Mr. Donaldson's class, which raised $3,038.23, would like to especially thank the law firm of Wade which came through the last day with a donation of $500. The students at Whitewater have truly changed the world for a better place. Though this story does not replace the bad stereotype about teens today, I hope it inspires all ages to want to make a difference and be a part of something.
