A single-engine plane based in Macon crashed in Senoia Sunday night, killing its pilot, officials said Monday morning.

The plane was reported missing after air traffic controllers lost the plane’s signal, and the wreckage was found about 1 a.m. this morning, officials said. The plane crashed in a wooded area about a mile from the new Heritage Point subdivision off Rockaway Road in Coweta County, officials said.

The plane had left Jacksonville, Fla. and was on its way to Macon but at some point the pilot made the decision to try and land in Peachtree City, said Kathleen Bergin of the Federal Aviation Administration. It was not clear why the diversion was made, although it could have been due to inclement weather in Macon, Bergin said.

The FAA is investigating the crash, which involved a PA-28 single-engine Piper aircraft registered to Haskell Aircraft Enterprises of Macon. No passengers were on board, officials said.

A while back a developer wanted to put houses on a tract of land near the end of the runway at Falcon Field. I wonder how far away the plane crashed from that tract of land.
