Peachtree City has joined a chorus of voices against a plan to eliminate property taxes for local governments, replacing them with revenues from an increased sales tax.

Speaker Glenn Richardson recently shrunk his plan so it would apply only to local school boards, but it initially targeted both city and county governments.

Richardson’s proposal would also eliminate current sales tax exemptions including those for services and on food purchases.

The plan would also affect senior citizens dramatically, as it would eliminate school property tax exemptions for senior-age property owners, said Mayor Harold Logsdon. Councilman Stuart Kourajian said that all seniors, even those who don’t own property, would feel the hit with increase sales taxes.

“Seniors that don’t own property will be hit the hardest,” Kourajian said.

Council approved a resolution opposing “any state tax plan that violates the principle of home rule, reduces local flexibility and funding sources and intrudes on the ability of the local governments to set fiscal policy and serve the citizen needs whom they represent.”

Steve Brown and Heidi Becker took the same position in their letters to the editor. If we lose local control of our school, we're dead.
