Congratulations go out to Lil Chip!
It is refreshing to see youngsters “doing the right thing” and lead by example.
Be proud and boast, we need more like your kids.

Tell him congratulations from a fellow Eagle Scout/percussionist.

What did he do for his Eagle Project?

Congrats back at you, Eagle Scout!

His project was an American Red Cross blood drive, which received 88 pints. What was your project?

Sounds like you and he have a lot in common! Did you go to All-State while in middle or high school? He went as a 7th & 8th grader, and made it past the first audition this year. Would be nice if he has a "three-peat" for this year.

Submitted by Daniel Ross on Wed, 12/12/2007 - 10:20am.

I made a PowerPoint of Fayette County History for 3rd grade students across the county.

I think that Scouts that complete a project that doesn't involve the construction of benches/picnic tables/etc are on a higher level than their wood-and-hammer counterparts.

As for all-state, I was too stupid during middle school-I put off auditioning for all-state until 8th grade. After that, I auditioned in 9th, and 11th grades (my percussion instructor wasn't too pleased with my score in 9th grade, causing me to sit through an hour and a half lecture about how he should have helped me, blah, blah, blah)

Anyways, it is very hard to get past the first round for percussionists. Congrats to him.

When he gets to high school, the auditions are harder (the scales must be done in the circle of fourths). About 10 percussionists per grade are chosen in high school and middle school.

"higher level"? A higher level of what? Aren't you being just a tad disrespectful to other Eagle Scouts? As an Eagle Scout you should applaud all projects and the Scouts that accomplish them. Perhaps, because of your young age, you made an error in not thinking before commenting. I sure hope so.

Yes, I made a poor choice of words.

Most Scouts start off pursuing lofty goals for their eagle project and then fall back to construction projects. While many of the first Eagle Scouts did construction projects, it was a new and exciting realm to explore. However, nowadays these projects are very similar. I should have just left my comment to say it is refreshing to see new and exciting ideas from today's Boy Scouts (i.e. Lil Chip)

Thank you for catching my mistake and I hope I didn't offend anybody.

Acknowledged. Just realize not all projects are the same and a lot of work goes into them as was my son's project. Yes, he's an Eagle Scout. His brother's Eagle project will likewise be a construction project for a local church.

Cheney was an Eagle, I think.
It must be similar to the Cub Scouts whittling out a racer by himself to run in the derby. Pop whittles it mostly.
Ever seen an 8 year old whittle hard wood?
I have, and my son like to have cut off his fingers before he got it completed! He didn't win but his looked like he did it alone and the others obviously weren't.

I do understand. Many Scouts go above and beyond on their construction projects. However, there are those few who put together shoddy equipment that break apart the next year. I have seen many of these projects where the people they were built for have to go out and buy new equipment.

I'm sure this is not the case with your sons and I apologize if I offended you with my first comment.

Your service project sounds great - is it still in use with current 3rd graders? Neither of our boys wanted to do a 'hammer and nail' or 'clear off a wooded lot' type of project.

Our oldest did a "Heart Screens for Teens" which does an ultrasound of the heart to detect a condition which can cause sudden cardiac deaths in children between the ages of 11 and 20.

Re: All-State, it was disappointing to know only two percussionists from FCHS auditioned for the first round last weekend, and only one is going on to the finals (Lil Chip).

When I told Lil Chip about your accomplishments and all the things you and he seem to have in common, he was totally surprised.

Hang in there at Tech! It's hard, but worth it.

Submitted by Daniel Ross on Wed, 12/12/2007 - 3:45pm.

Many high schoolers don't try out for All-State because they don't want to put in the effort (percussionists are dismayed by the amount of stuff they have to do for the first audition.)

I believe it is still in use at Burch Elementary, but am not sure about other schools. It seems to have lost steam once I passed the torch over to my contact at the BoE. However, I'm going to go by my old elementary school (Burch) this week and check up on it.

I was recently suprised when I was rushing for Alpha Phi Omega that myself and a brother were both Eagle Scouts/Percussionists.

There are many percussionists out there that are in the same boat as Lil' Chip and myself. It's just hard to find them.

Does he take AP classes? Because then we'd have one more thing in common.

(P.S. Is Mischa still helping out with percussion at FCHS?)

Mesha helped with Drum Camp back in June, then moved on to something around the Kennesaw/Marietta area, I think. Since I can't say anything nice about the percussion director after her, I won't say anything, except for he's gone now and won't be back.

Being a 9th grader, AP classes aren't available to him yet, but he will take them. He is currently taking gifted classes.

You may know a current 11th grader at SCHS: He's an excellent percussionist, but I don't think he was able to continue in band due to him being in Jr. ROTC and playing baseball (initials: M.J.). He attended Fayette Middle and we knew him back then. He could sound like a machine gun on a snare!

Submitted by Daniel Ross on Wed, 12/12/2007 - 6:07pm.

Sorry it took me so long, I'm currently tied up at my church.

Mesha and my percussion director were excellent instructors. They both knew how to deal with problem students.

I looked up MJ in last year's yearbook and realized that I'm pretty sure he didn't play in the symphonic or marching bands, but he could have been in one of the Concert Bands.

Nice to have a feel good blog to help alll of us bloggers searching for a reason to feel good about the goings ons in our community. We all know that Eagle Scouts don't become Eagle Scouts without the love and support of parents. The miles driven, patches sewn, meetings planned, attended, stocked with refreshment. The camping and hours spent not doing other things that mom and dad felt they needed to do, but giving the time to their kids that they knew and still know will make them better adults and parents when the time comes. Parents should have a "Parent of an Eagle Scout" badge.

Now, if we can just get those kids into Air Force Flight suits....... Smiling

I'm not that fond of planes (especially when in conjunction with the Air Force) but I'm at Tech working on a degree in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. So if I did join, I'd be on the ground letting the pilots know how the weather is.
