David Simmons, former Deputy Chief of Police Detroit Police Department announced today that he is a candidate for the 2008 Republican nomination for Fayette County Sheriff.
"I have a history of law enforcement and public service," said Simmons Friday.
He is currently the President of David L. Simmons & Associates, a security consulting company.
Prior to moving to Fayette County in 1998, he served as a deputy chief of police with the Detroit Police Department, and served as the chief of staff for the chief of police. Simmons assisted the chief in managing the day-to-day operations of the 4,500 member department. Upon retiring from the department in 1996, Simmons was appointed to the position of director of public safety for the city of Highland Park, Michigan. Simmons has received awards for his service from the Detroit Field Office’s of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (A.T.F), the Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.), and the United States Secret Service.
"Randall has told several people that he's retiring and I think my qualifications would be a good fit for the county," he said.
He said he would use progressive law enforcement management strategies to administer the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and would ensure that the department is operated in a professional and cost effective manner.

This gentleman sounds very qualified to me. He has had training and management experience. The others running may be nice guys, but I am not impressed. Three others have announced that they are running since the current sheriff is not running again. They will not start really doing anything until next year. The ones running so far except Mr. Simmons currently work at the department.

Until you endorse someone to replace you stop all of this retirment talk. Everyone knows men your age don't have hobbies outside of work anyway.

Thank you for all of your hard work, but we still need you until you groom somone to replace you. Frankly I think it will be a tough choice between Wayne and Barry, they are both very good because of your training.

First of all our current Sheriff who is loved has not officially retired yet. Unless he does....Wayne, Barry, Tom, or this outsider don't have a snowballs chance in hell.

I have a few questions for Dave Simmons:

1.) You have been retired for 12yrs.....how are you going to get back in the game??

2.) Have you been actively practicing at a firing range, ie. could your shooting qualify??

I ask these questions because our current sheriff, (the one who has not officially retired yet), is an active working sheriff in the field. He backs up his men and women daily. We are not used to having a sheriff who stays at home, or in the office sorting paperclips, or a sheriff who prances around in front of TV cameras, and we aren't going to get used to it either. We are used to a sheriff who puts the people of this county first and works in the field, can we expect the same performance from you??

Right now our sheriffs dept. is one that the citizens can count on. Randall obviously takes customer service very seriously, because his people do take it seriously everyday. I have had to call the sheriffs dept. for help several times in the last couple of years. They answer the phone and are willing to go above the call of duty when they can. Can we expect this same level of service to continue if someone who has not trained under Sheriff Johnson were elected??

I think many of us are tired of show ponies who prance in front of TV cameras and do little or nothing for the average citizen here(jim, bruce). Someone from a police dept. brings to mind something we don't want.
Right now we have a police dept that A)doesn't or rarely patrols neighborhoods, B) we have a police chief who likes to prance in front of TV cameras and that is the only time he is seen outside of the police station C) we have police that grudgingly return phone calls to crime victims D) we have police that will provide off-duty cops for buisnesses, but not private citizens. Hearing about your police experience 12yrs ago is not a positive when we have to call our sheriff's dept. for extra patrols. It would be nice if the police were for us, but that has not been the case for the average citizen.

The sheriff's dept. on the other hand has always been there for us and it starts with the leadership at the top. What kind of customer service can the average citizen expect from you??

For those of you who think Bruce would run, I think he has moved on, too many people remember the I Team report.

If Sheriff Johnson retires it will be interesting to see who he backs to replace him. That is the person who will run this county. I hope he picks someone who will continue his hard work, and concern for the average person here.

A news crew recently exposed a sheriff in another county who rarely showed up at the office and never worked in the field. Let's not let that happen here. We need to at least elect someone who can qualify on a firing range, pass a physical endurance test, and get out of the office.

I truly believe you need to relook at your comment about "outsider". How many born and raised Georgians live in Fayette County? I for one am what you call an "outsider" who came from the Detroit Area and had family work under Mr Simmons. I am now a Georgia Resident and will be looking at Mr Simmons along with all the other candidates when this position is open. I'm sure all of the individuals will have their positive and negative sides. Contrary to your message, I'm sure Mr Simmons is more then ready and qualified for this position.

This isn't an issue about state residence.

The issue is this county does not, and has never had a "desk jockey" running it. We want someone with current law enforcement experience. Our current sheriff works alongside his deputies, and they know if he shoots at a criminal he won't hit them. Our current sheriff takes his job seriously, he isn't in the job to be a TV camera princess. He doesn't sit around and do basket weaving and crossword puzzles.

Simmons retired 12yrs ago, and he was in upper management in a police dept. which is a desk job. How long was he in that desk job??

The other 3 possible candidates are all actively fighting crime in the field. They have big job titles with the sheriff's dept. not big desks. I personally feel that is why this county has stayed clean. Everyone from the sheriff on down is busy patrolling and are very visible in the community.

Having a sheriff that works and is visible has always worked here, if it isn't broken lets not "fix" it.

You are correct. Randall has not said he is retiring yet. These wannabes are throwing in their hats, in case he retires. If Randall doesn't retire, not a one of them will have a snowball's chance.

Submitted by tonto707 on Sun, 12/02/2007 - 8:27pm.

can we deduce that you believe Wayne and Barry have thrown their hats into the ring with still a possibility they will be running against their superior, Randall Johnson?

Anyone who has their ear to the ground knows that Randall has assured everyone that he will not be running again.

Having said that, I will quickly agree with a previous blogger that whomever Randall supports will have a huge headstart.

Mr Simmons will run a token race to remind us that there are people of color in the county and at the same time realizing that he has little or no chance at winning.

It's not over 'til it's over. I know what Randall has said, and I know he wants to retire, but you'll have to wait until the deadline to see if he runs.

If you read my other posts, you will see that I know there is no one in his department who will run against Randall. So I guess that leaves Al Hogan and Mr. Simmons.

Randall has stated that he is not running again and retiring.

Maybe people think Randall announcing he's retiring is similar to what attention whores Roger Clements or Brett Favre do every year. Somehow,I think when Randall said he was retiring, he meant it.

This guy is getting way ahead of himself. We already have a sheriff and we don't need another one until this one retires.

Submitted by veni vidi vici ... on Sun, 12/02/2007 - 2:23pm.

That is four months away. So the announcements from four people who are running is not putting the cart before the horse. The race will be decided in July, 2008. Do you want them to wait until then to announce????

Submitted by susieq on Sat, 12/01/2007 - 10:28pm.

Simmons is the only one who has "announced." The others are waiting to see what Randall decides to do.

Thank you for running, Mr. Simmons. You are a braver man than I. Perhaps, though, you might have faced a tad more pressure during your law enforcement career than you face with on line bloggers.

This will be an unusual race for Sheriff. Most small and medium size counties have Sheriff races with a half dozen or so candidates, many of whom have zero experience. One of our neighboring counties to the south elected an ambulance driver. Here we have the top administrative cop from a department which is larger than any law enforcement agency in Georgia. I think Mr. Simmons' record, particularly on the adminstrative side, makes him a competitive candidate. Good luck to you Dave and to Barry, Wayne, Bruce and whoever else chooses to run.

This guy looks like the Fulton Co.Sheriff. The problem with this job is no body in their right mind wants it. To many butts to kiss.

Submitted by veni vidi vici ... on Sun, 12/02/2007 - 2:28pm.

Do you judge people by how they look? This man doesn't look a thing like Myron Freeman except for one thing. There is no wonder that the least qualified person often gets elected. Just look at Horgan. He certainly was not the best person for the job, but old ways of thinking got in the way. Now the citizens of this county are stuck with an unqualified white guy sitting there taking up space. People like some bloggers dont have a clue.

And to chat with too. He's a very personable man with an incredible resume. I would need to be convinced that he would fight to keep Randall Johnson's tough on crime image and reputation intact for the protection of Fayette Countians. Personally, I think it might be best to keep an insider in place rather than bring in someone from Detroit. That's just my gut feeling at this point. It'll all depend on who runs for that seat. But, I will definitely give Mr. Simmons my consideration...for what it's worth.

Yeah boy, look what he did to help the crime rate in Detroit...
That's such a "crime free" city where everybody feels safe...

In 2004 there were:
39.3 murders per 100,000 while the national average is 6.9.
65.4 rapes per 100,000 while the national average is 34.6.
1,495.9 Aggrevated assaults per 100,000 while the national average is 340.1
.. sounds just like what we need.

I don't think the Detroit City helps this guy. When you think of Fayette County, GA and Detroit City, MI which one do you in your mind think of as safer?

Most dangerous place the other side of south Atlanta!
How could he be worse than Atlanta's or Fulton County's sheriffs?
Even Pot-hole Shirley along with a monthly scandal has been considered for Vice-President of the USA! Big artificial flower and all.
How about the last three guys who ran Grady Hospital?
Are all those Grady Boards people available for a Fayette Sheriff?
Hey, don't forget Mr. Jordan.

Submitted by susieq on Sat, 12/01/2007 - 9:00pm.

Don't go "bonkers" on me now, but IMHO, and IF Randall retires, I think Bruce Jordan could run for sheriff and WIN! (Unless somebody mighty strong throws in his hat).

JorDONE is a good one, but you know people are crazy when it comes to voting. These bloggers don't decide who wins elections. Truth is, people forget, and name recognition on the ballot means a lot, good or bad.

For the record, in case you are wondering, I'm a Randall person.
