Wieland charette for 88 acres Tuesday nightFri, 11/30/2007 - 1:09pm
By: The Citizen
John Wieland Homes will conduct a planning meeting Tuesday night, unveiling its vision for an 88-acre parcel on the western side of Ga. Highway 74, across from the southern end of Kedron Drive. The company will solicit questions and comments from the public at the meeting, which will start at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. The tract is being studied by a citizen's task force, which will provide a recommendation to the City Council as to how the property would be best developed. Wieland officials had previously indicated they wanted to develop the industrial zoned tract as residential, perhaps with townhomes directly along the CSX railroad track to buffer sound from the remaining single family homes. City officials have said previously they would like to see the property developed as office-institutional. Part of the parcel is best known as the former Wometco cable company building. The railroad provides somewhat of a hurdle for the property, as an at-grade railroad crossing is necessary to access the parcel from Ga. Highway 74. Wieland had initially proposed 350 townhomes on the property in conjunction with an annexation request of adjacent land that was ultimately approved by council. The 88 acres is inside the city limits, and Wieland withdrew it from consideration as part of the master plan for the annexed area after council members said they didn't like the density proposed for the 88 acre parcel. login to post comments |
