Local is good...........

Do you people not understand how the various levels of government work? What exactly do you people want a State Representative to do about growth in our area? The general assembly does not zone, it does not annex and frankly I don’t want the General Assembly within a country mile of any decision affecting our community regarding growth. At least Ramsey has repeatedly stated his strong views on maintaining local control over local affairs. We can’t criticize meddling old Seabaugh for sticking his nose in TDK and then in the next breath say we want Brown working on local growth issues in the Assembly. It cuts both ways and I don’t want any of them involved and only want the appropriate body making these local decisions….the City Council and County Commission. I just want a candidate that adheres to the conservative idea of keeping the state and federal government out of our business. State intervention is the essence of liberal government. Frankly, I’m sick of talking about these issues that have NOTHING to do with what a State Representative actually votes on.

Since former Mayor Brown and his followers keep hammering all the "devolopment" money that supports some of the candidates for District 72, perhaps a history lesson is in order.
Steve Brown's largest contributor in his mayoral campaign was a developer - Doug McMurrain. Steve Brown is a total hypocrite in talking against developer influence yet has a history of his largest contributor to his mayoral campaign being a developer. He wants Ramsey to be painted as a developer candidate yet accepts Doug McMurrain's $$$ no problem. I guess there is a qualitative difference in the type of developer whose support is accepted.

I love these people that jump and down yelling “Brown’s largest contributor is a developer” at the same time they're yelling, “Brown is against developers”.

It’s rather obvious to me that if developers are stupid enough to give Steve Brown money for his campaign, then we’re dealing with people that have more money than brains.

If you have a problem with Steve Brown taking money from developers, I would suggest that you call your friends and tell them to STOP giving him money. It makes both you and them look stupid.

This from an article in the citizen published 12/29/05.

Brown was known for criticizing the actions of past developers, who he still says “ran the city” until he took office. But in this case, the $1,000 contribution from McMurrain — who developed the commercial area including the Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other stores along Ga. Highway 54 West — is different, Brown said.

"The things Doug did were amazing,” Brown said, praising McMurrain for working with the city to implement design guidelines in the area and spending more money to make the area look nicer than the city could have required. Brown also noted that once the widening of Hwy. 54 is finished, RAM will install its landscaping to make the area look even nicer.

Brown contends he has never been anti-development, but he just wanted a higher quality of development.

You can't have it both ways. Which side of his mouth will he talk out of next?

Nobody ever said Brown was 'anti-development'. What's up with that? He's a controlled growth advocate. Duh!

Is that the best you guys can do is dredge up that one contribution that back-fired on your boy McMurrain? Git a life.

Oh... and how much money hast Steve Brown received this election cycle? Here, I'll help you with it, since you've refused to let the facts sink into your thick skull. Not a dime. Isn't it obvious that Steve isn't shaking the developer money tree like your boy Ramsey and his mentor State Senator Judas Iscariot Seabaugh?

Is that the best you can do? Call names? Just like you, I base my decision on a candidate by looking at who supports the candidate. I wasn't going to vote for Steve before, and the rantings of his supporters solidifies my decision.

Your MO is just like his. You've learned from your master well. All of you.

Gee... like the rantings, lies and misrepresentations from Lawyer Ramsey's supporters haven't solidified our positions. (eye's rolling)

I think Brown could/would be able to do MUCH less damage for PTC if he was indeed elected to the State House. With his attitude, he'll get ZIP done.

IF he loses, we are doomed to have him run over and over and over...long letter after long letter after long letter to the Paper. Until they hire him, and then he decides to run again, then they have to let him to, only for it to start all over again...then his Wife tells him to paint the basement and he's quiet for a month or so.

These guys are exactly the reason I voted for Ramsey.

I read every candidate's letters and Thirty Years in PTC says former Mayor Brown is against local control? Maybe you confused another candidate's letter with his name.

The quotes below were cut straight out of former Mayor Brown's letter on this site:

"Our state constitution is an instrument of delegated powers; thus, I believe our state government should not stray from the powers granted to it and rigidly constrained by the constitution."

"Transportation – In short, we have a mess. There is no coordinated strategy linking new development in metro Atlanta to transportation improvements with the result being traffic congestion that is ranked number two in the nation. We must develop predictable growth models which are linked to development plans in the region which are rewarded with transportation improvements."

"If your area develops like a bat out of hell beyond the parameters of the agreed-upon model and plan, then you pay the consequences. Local governments need to be held accountable in this area. Build it now and figure it all out later is a horrible idea."

"The DOT had to drop 250 road projects this year because they lacked the funding. We need to reconfigure the system and DOT in an intelligent manner which rewards sound development and transportation principles and saves tax dollars."

"Tax reform and budgeting – Speaker Richardson’s alternative tax plan does not relieve us of paying taxes as you would be expected to simply pay in another format, sales taxes on everything. However, what the Speaker’s plan does accomplish is centralized government as cities, counties and school districts would be stripped of their power to levy most taxes."

"Local control of the community would be lost because local officials would no longer have the authority to decide how much to spend. Centralized government is not a step in the right direction."

"I was deeply concerned last year when the Sen. Chip Rogers’ (R-Woodstock) proposal on a flexible cap on state spending was rejected by the Republican majority. The conservative principles of government is best handled at the local level, the elimination of pork projects (it is in FY 2008) and reining in spending are being abandoned so far by the Republican leadership."

"Education – We are about to see a major tug-of-war over control of education. I am very opposed to the state collecting taxes levied for education and doling them out to individual school districts as they please. Such a system would be ripe for political favoritism. Fayette County has a great thing going in education; let us not ruin it."

Now it sounds to me like he is in favor of local control. I think the blogger was thinking about the posts from candidates Heidi Becker and Matt Ramsey which said almost nothing.
