I’m lamenting having to deal with the antics of Harold Logsdon for two more years. I felt like weeping for our city at the last council meeting. It’s the crooked leading the blind. Hollis Harris was part of a group backing our mayor and many of us believed them. Sorry, Hollis, I’m not listening to you again in the state house race. While I admire your accomplishments in the business world, I truly think you’re wasting your social community capital on a guy like Matt Ramsey. Whether you like Steve Brown or not, he’s honest, effective and the best of the bunch. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Oh, my, Hollis Harris, the fried chicken eating good old boy, is putting his greasy hand behind the Matt Ramsey kid in the House race. You know what they say, where there’s smoke, there’s Hollis Harris. I might have to vote Democrat. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Qualifying for the late Dan Lakly’s legislative seat ended last week. Many Fayette political observers, however, generally do not consider an election campaign season to have officially begun until Trey Hoffman writes a letter to the editor in The Citizen smearing the Democratic candidate. Now that Mr. Hoffman has delivered his oh-so-predictable hatchet job, the candidates may begin to campaign in earnest. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Political campaign signs that appear on properties next to “For Sale” signs on the same property always give me a chuckle. You know the ones I am talking about — the mini billboards that appear on large undeveloped commercial property. Like the ones sprouting up next to bulldozers by lawyer Ramsey. The owners typically have no clue the sign is there. It is the real estate broker that puts them up. Exactly what is the candidate doing to get these big signs posted by the developers, brokers and agents? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Would someone please tear down those obnoxious billboards at The Avenue? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The only downside about widening Ga. Highway 74 is that we can look forward to another couple of miles with drivers plodding along in the fast lane. I know if you question these left lane drivers they will say that they are driving the speed limit and therefore they are doing nothing wrong. George Carlin once said, “Everyone who drives slower than you is an idiot, and everyone who drives faster than you is a maniac.” I don’t support speeding through town; however, I do know that there is a universal rule which says slower traffic should move to the right. If you are not passing anyone and people are passing you on the right, you need to move over. The idiots and the maniacs may not be the problem; perhaps YOU are the problem. The world must be an interesting place to left lane drivers; it is full of colorful objects and shiny things. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I spent Friday after Thanksgiving strolling about the local markets and watching the shoppers. This is supposed to be the busiest shopping day of the year. Aside from a few extra bargain hunters I did not see much difference in the crowd of shoppers one would see on any other Friday. I took special note of how people paid for their purchases. From Wal-Mart to Kroger’s to the gas pumps and the liquor stores, it was credit cards almost exclusively. What are people going to do in this country when the credit runs out as it is certain to do in the near future? More and more people are defaulting on the huge credit card balances they have run up just trying to live. People are earning less and paying more every day. Every jump in prices at the gas pump means a jump in the price of groceries and all other consumer goods. Our economy is in deep trouble in spite of the propaganda our government puts out. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Apparently the Kroger Company isn’t really interested in keeping people coming to the little Kroger in PTC. A week ago I stopped there to buy a bottle of wine for a dinner party; I bought some fairly expensive wine. At the party, when the wine was opened, it had turned to vinegar. Apparently it had been on the shelf at the Kroger long past its time. Imagine how embarrassed I was. I took the wine back the next day with the receipt, expecting to receive at least an apology or better yet, a credit or another bottle of wine. Instead, I was berated for not having noticed the small sign in the wine department saying “no refunds,” which they said was a federal law (it isn’t) and which they claim even applies to spoiled product. I was told if I didn’t like it, I could take it up with the winery. Believe me, it will be a cold day before I darken their door again, and I hope others avoid buying their questionable wine, since they won’t stand by it. Obviously, they don’t care whether people shop at their Kroger store. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To the driver of the white Oldsmobile (Ga. tag ending in TRX) who threw garbage from your car on Monday morning while traveling down Braelinn Road about 7:20 a.m., your full tag number has been reported to the PTC police for littering. You never know who is watching — it may be a citizen sick and tired of your type. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The amount of trash on the cart paths is intolerable. The PTC Council keeps asking for more taxes, but I can’t see what we are getting in return. Numerous calls to City Hall are ignored. We need to go back to the time when local government would respond when you asked them to. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I am a SMHS football parent as well and I have to agree with the upset parents about not having a JV football team. I have a soon-to-be player. I do not question the coach’s integrity; however, I disagree with not having a JV team. I was told that sophomores and juniors play on the JV team, so if that is the case, I’m sure that there were plenty of kids. In regards to expressing disappointment with the coach, many parents fear that their child will be singled out and never get a chance if a parent approaches a coach. At a minimum they could have played some JV games since after all he did play some freshman as sophomores and juniors sat and watched at the end of the season. Bottom line: just made a wrong decision for the kids. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To the Wildcat fans who traveled to Thomasville to support our team, thank you. It really meant a lot having such a great show of support. Wildcat fans, you are the greatest. And for the band members and cheerleaders who chose to make the trip thank you as well. Wildcats, thank you for a great football season. You gave us all something to look forward to on Friday night. We are very proud of you and all that you have accomplished this year. Winning the first playoff game in school history and playing a great game last Friday night. The Yellow Jacket fans and players said you are an awesome football team. Of course all of us Wildcat fans already knew that. Seniors, thank you for a magical season; we are going to miss you. 2007 Wildcats, we love you. It is great to be a Wildcat. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thank you to the anonymous family who delivered the beautiful flowers to my elderly mom, someone you didn’t even know, at Piedmont Fayette Hospital on Nov. 17. Your thoughtfulness definitely warmed her heart and ours, too. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In response to “fluorescent blue house,” you’re absolutely right. This house has been looking quite poorly since before we bought it two years ago. We purchased it knowing that it was a fixer-upper, and we are currently in the process of doing just that — fixing it up to serve as our home. If you look at fluorescent blue with the right attitude, you may see the progress we are making. The house is now freshly painted with one color instead of having a yellow garage and gray house. You may think it looks worse every time you drive by, but I urge you to look at the progress we’ve made and are making. We are not just going to let this house sit and become more run down. We’ve only contracted the house painting; everything else we have done ourselves. Isn’t that amazing, that so much work has been accomplished in such a short amount of time by so few people, people who work 60-80 hour weeks and have an infant to care for? You may not like the color of our home, but it’s ours. Our subdivision is not a covenanted one; if you are unhappy then you have the freedom to move. You’re right on another count: this is not Clayton County. Their citizens tend to be quick to place anonymous calls to the cops, stalk people who offend them, and write editorials that may or may not be read by the people they‘re aimed at. Fayette County citizens talk to their neighbors. Since the editorial was published we’ve had three neighbors stop and give us support. Several more have shown support and kindness to us in passing. A few neighbors have helped us with yard work. Before the editorial we had several people tell us how happy they were to see someone working on this former HUD home, including county officials. We love our neighbors and feel sorry that you are so unhappy. It seems only a select few are unhappy with us. Please forgive us for offending you with our home, but it is our home and we will improve it as we see fit. login to post comments |
