Chan Gailey Fired!

As of 11:45 a.m. today, Dan Radakovich, Athletics Director here at Tech, announced that the head football coach position was open once more. After only 6 seasons at GT, Chan's ability to lose to UGA ultimately lead to his firing even though he had a winning record.

Here's the AJC story:

What do y'all think?

GT fans may be disappointed. As long as Georgia has Richt & Co, they are setting themselves up for disappointment counting on very many wins vs the DAWGS....1 or 2 out of 10 is probably pushing it.

On another note, I met Gailey a few times, heard him speak etc. He was a good guy. I wish him well.

In the end the inability to beat Georgia for six straight years was Coach Gailey's downfall. Yes he had a winning season each year, but had at least 5 defeats each year. When you factor in that one win per year was against a I-AA team, he really had winning seasons by just a game most seasons. And the three straight losses last year to end the season after starting 9-2 was a very sore point with the fans.

The bottom line is that the GT program had not progressed since Coach Gailey took over and was in fact beginning to slide backwards. So now is a good time to change leadership.

Do you think Bobby Ross is available?

Bobby Dodd himself couldn't coach that team into a win against Georgia - and Bobby Ross, George O'Leary, Bill Curry and Pepper Rodgers combined could not either.

Next guy in better get a good contract because he won't last 3 years.

Gailey had a great shot these past few years with teams like Miami and Florida State not really looking like themselves. Those programs appear to be on the rise again (may not be reflected in their records this year, but it certainly looks true) and then you have to factor in BC, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Clemson. It's not impossible to get through some of those teams each year, but Tech certainly hasn't looked too capable of playing at that level week in and week out for a long time.

Next coach will have a tough time beating UGA over the next two years, too - with Stafford and Knowshon behind a line that is gaining experience like crazy this year.

Bring back O'Leary, give him his price and a resume to be named later.

"give him his price and a resume to be named later" . . .you have no idea how very very true those last five words are . . .shoot, there are folk here who (maybe) have a high school education in director positions, making over $120K a year who will retire with all benefits and 20 some years.

I don't recall every detail of the coach's departure, but the "resume" thing alone could not have been the actual cause . . .naw, not with some of the folk in charge around here!!!

Those in charge need to say there was a little "hiccup" in the paperwork and bring him back.

O'Leary left us to go to Notre Dame, where his little irregularity was outed by the press. I really don't care what it said, bring him back.

I was agreeing with you, bring him back.

My point is, "irregularities" are "handled" all the time . . . lots of folks around here have "creative resumes"!! It should be interesting to see who is considered.
