Ex-Mayor Brown, 3 others qualify for Dec. 18 House District 72 special electionWed, 11/21/2007 - 12:37pm

[Vote for your choice in our unscientific poll on the left side of this page.] Controversial former Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown is among four candidates seeking to fill the unexpired term of the late Rep. Dan Lakly (R-Peachtree City) in the Dec. 18 special election. Brown is running as a Republican in the officially non-partisan election. Kevin Madden of Peachtree City is the only announced Democratic Party candidate. Publicist Heidi Becker of Fayetteville and attorney Matt Ramsey of Peachtree City round out the special election slate. Qualifying closed at noon today (Nov. 21). Below is the news release from the Ga. Secretary of State’s office: Secretary of State Karen Handel closed qualifying for the special election to fill state House District 72 today at noon. Four candidates qualified and paid the qualifying fee of $400 for the special election to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, a run-off election will be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008. The following candidates qualified and will be placed on the ballot in alphabetical order: Heidi Becker, 290 Braemar Rd., Fayetteville, GA 30215. Party affiliation: Republican. Steve Brown, 148 Terrane Ridge, Peachtree City, GA 30269. Party affiliation: Republican. Kevin Madden, 136 Highgreen Ridge, Peachtree City, GA 30269. Party affiliation: Democrat. Matt Ramsey, 200 Terrane Ridge, Peachtree City, GA 30269. Party affiliation: Republican. The election is a non-partisan special election with no party primary. However, each candidate’s party affiliation will be listed on the ballot. All citizens residing in state House District 72 who wish to vote in the special election can register to vote through the close of business Wednesday, Nov. 21. Voter registration forms can be obtained at http://www.sos.state.ga.us/elections/voter_registration/voter_reg_app.htm. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Advance voting will be held Monday, Dec. 10 through Friday, Dec. 14. The election will be held in portions of Fayette County, including Fayetteville and Peachtree City. Voters can request an absentee ballot from their county registrar’s office through Friday, Dec. 14. All absentee ballots must be received by the county registrar by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Dec. 18. Photo identification is not required when voting by mail. Voters will be required to show photo identification when voting in person.
