Maj. Dupree to lead department during chief search

Peachtree City's police chief has officially decided to retire from his position, the city has confirmed.

James V. Murray has been the head of the department for 18 years, overseeing the city's safety during a period of tremendous growth.
City spokesperson Betsy Tyler confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that Murray will retire effective January 1.

Maj. Mike Dupree, who has served as second in command under Murray, will lead the department during the city’s nationwide search for a new chief, city officials said.

An officer since 1973, Murray saw to it that the department achieved national accreditation, requiring it to meet or exceed hundreds of law enforcement standards. Murray has been lauded for turning out a number of his officers who have been hired on by state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Murray has also crusaded in recent years for the city to hire more officers and increase officer pay to compete with other metro law enforcement agencies that offer better salaries for starting officers.

Under Murray the department has grown from 25 to 61 officers. The department has won the flagship agency award from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, which also recently awarded Murray with the Egon Bittner award.

Murray's permanent replacement will be chosen by the City Council per city ordinance.

Mayor Harold Logsdon said Murray leaves an experienced command staff and a well-trained force that will function effectively until a replacement is named.

“Chief Murray has served our city well during his time here,” Logsdon said. “The Council and I appreciate all the great work he has accomplished, and the resulting credit he has brought upon the department and Peachtree City as a whole.”

You will in fact not be missed you are a rude and unpleasant man.I can not think of one person that says otherwise. I KNOW your job was a cake walk you must be JUST bored to tears to retire from that job. I really have a hard time believing that you will be missed. Just for the record Egon Bittner was never a police officer nor did he EVER serve on any government agencies. AND another thing you are not even recognized on his own website. Just thought you might want to know. Go back to Savannah. I know you cant work there ever again!!

I heard he is going to the mountains with the llamas. Whatever, he was pretty lazy, but dern....
I'm not sure where he crossed you, I just don't like how the average citizen really didn't matter to him. Not only do they rarely patrol the neighborhoods, or paths, he wouldn't let his officers work off-duty for the citizens that were willing to pay more for extra patrols. The good thing is we have a great sheriffs dept.

He kept the local tv crews busy, when he felt like it, and he did at least get his officers a safe building to work in.

Maybe this will be a fresh start for PTC

PTC PD has been understaffed for years, as has the Fire Department for that matter. Who exactly is supposed to be patrolling the golf cart paths when there aren't even enough officers to fully cover the streets/neighborhoods in the city? This is hardly new...it's been that way for about a decade now.

Murray brought this issue up ever year, cited statistics on per-capital officer-resident ratios, and no one listened. I guess they were too busy complaining instead of demanding that council fund the PD so they could recruit/hire/train more officers.

I want even start on how "hosed" the FD is on the same issue. Once a couple of preventable tragedies occur due to either PD or FD or both being stretched way too far, then maybe something will get done. Sort of like how several traffic studies over the past 15 years has said put a light at Crosstown/Peachtree Parkway but no council has done anything yet.

PTC has been getting by for several years through some very dedicated people and a lot of luck. Eventually, luck runs out.

I've seen the cops in PTC helping at churches on Sunday for pay!
Who wanted to hire them to patrol neighborhoods?

Ummmm....hate to rain on your "I hate the cops" parade, but I believe that the police who direct traffic at our churches do this on their own time. Hard to believe, but even our police get days off. Sad thing is they need to supplement their income by hiring themselves off to our churches, the amphitheater, etc. on their own time to help afford to live. I personally know one of the policemen who works one of our churches every Sunday. You can not ask for a more forthright and upstanding individual.
I am not a fan of Murray. I am glad he and his "Napoleon complex" is retiring. But the patrolmen and women I know and have dealt with are the best (some aren't). They work hard to keep PTC a clean and safe city. Give them the respect they deserve.

I've always felt safe in Fayette County. Sheriff Johnson and Chief Murray deserve a lot of credit.

I saw you ascend to the office of Chief and now I see you retire. It will feel strange not having you at the helm after all these years.

Thank you, enjoy your retirement and know you will be missed.

You had about as thankless of a job as a Mayor/councilmember does and you made the PD into a first-class organization that it sure wasn't prior to your arrival here. Thanks for having a big part in what makes PTC special. You will be missed.

Oh yeah, the Red Sox still suck:)

I know your intentions were good Jelly Bean but you have no place to speak for "us all".

I'll leave it at that so Hi There doesn't lecture me too.

There is good and bad with everything. Your chief has at least fought for all of you to get a raise and have a safe building to work in.

I work in a building with black mold and most of us are sick. It has been overlooked for years instead of fixed. Your chief has actually stepped up to the plate and fought for you. The smokers where I work are healthier than the rest of us because they go outside on every break to smoke. They have fewer sick days than the rest of us who used to stay inside on breaks. Now most of us including yours truly go outside of the building on every break. Even today when it was raining, it was still better to sit in your car than the poison building.

I think jelly bean is a little myopic. This is not utopia. On the one hand at least you don't get shot at daily like an average large city cop. On the other hand you guys get cussed almost daily by the low-life half-wit parents here. So this isn't the best place to work, but it isn't the worst either.

Thanks for keeping us all safe.

Zone 1 - If you re-read my post, you'll realize that you are included. More than likely he hired you (I can only think of 2 that he didn't), gave you a great job in a great city. Also, if you re-read the post again, you'll see that I mention the bad too. Please remember that you didn't have to be hired, that you didn't have to be accepted by all of us, and you don't have to work for Peachtree City. With that said, you do owe thanks for at least something. Remember the good, put the bad behind us, do your job and enjoy the heck out of the rest of your career. We are one of the best agencies out there. We all make sure of that - regardless of whether you agreed with Chief or not.

On behalf of all of us at the PD, thank you Chief. I know I can speak for everyone by saying this as you have done something wonderful for each of us. For most of us, you hired us. For most of us, you disciplined us. For most of us, you were there during the hardest of times. For all of us, you made us the Law Enforcement professionals that we are. Through the good, and the bad, you made sure that we treated people fairly, that we gave as much as we could to the City that we serve and love. Peachtree City has lost a great Chief, but as you said the other day, we will work for our next Chief, and we will continue to work for our City. Thanks again for everything that you have done and I for one will never forget the lessons learned over the past 10 years.

The Chief and all in his department deserve quite a bit of praise. Chief Murray ran a tight ship and demanded the best from the men and women in his charge.

A very significant area where Chief Murray excelled was finding and hiring quality people. They have a solid department from top to bottom.

I had the honor of attending the one of the national certification hearings in Colorado with members of our department. While departments from all over the country were getting chewed to bits before the certification panel, and I sat through most of them, our department received only rave reviews and the word "excellent" was used nearly a dozen times.

The crime statistics speak volumes and the department is the utmost in professionalism.

Thank you for the constant good work.

ARE WE about to see another hat tossed in the ring for sheriff?

Chief Murray has done a good job.

Good luck and Godspeed.

Yes, Murray has done a lot of good things for the police officers in Peachtree City! His one main flaw is that he is "camera happy". Always looking to make the "big splash" for the news media so he can be a big fish too. Only one problem, he doesn't always seems to get his facts straight before running his mouth. If I'm correct, this is why he lost his job in Savannah before coming to Peachtree City; media happy. It's smart to get all of your ducks lined up before you start shooting as one of those "ducks" might have teeth and come back to bite you in the butt.

Camera happy or not he did a great service to a growing community!!! He took on the possition as the "Cheif of Police"!!! What have you done? Just like a Jackass flapping his gums; get your facts right, he did not lose his job in Savannah! In fact he was a very well decorated officer before he took on his job in Peachtree City.
Congradulations on a job well done! You have made us all proud! Maybe we will get to see some snow this year!!!

If it is as you say, "a shock!!!". Then let the man retire and go about his business in peace. Peachtree City has one of the lowest crime rates in the state, and their police don't put up with any sh*t!!! So, if you will please not rain on someone elses parade, it would be appreciated.
My mother taught me not say anything, if i didn't have anything nice to say. It is a lesson you should learn. the next time you go flapping your gums make sure you face the croud and know what YOU are talking about!

Most of us appreciate the "big splash". Thanks Jim for a great 18 years. We owe a debt of gratitude to you and the fine women and men of law enforcement for keeping our city, children, and homes safe for all of these years. How can you argue with living in one of the safest communities in America. I just hope it stays that way. Go right your book and good luck in all of your endeavors. I hear the mountains are beautiful this time of year.
