BoE, uproot as few kids as possible in rezoningTue, 11/13/2007 - 5:00pm

We are writing to make a plea to the men and women who make up the Fayette County Board of Education. Please allow the children of Georgian Park to continue their education at Kedron Elementary. We are very concerned and oppose the school redistricting plan that would unnecessarily force hundreds of Peachtree City children to change schools. Kedron Elementary was built as an investment in the future of the children of Kedron Village. And even if we squint, it’s hard for us to see the rationale behind sending Georgian Park students to a school outside their village only to make room for students who’ll have to commute from another village. One plan that the board will consider moves more children than necessary, and somehow it’s supposed to hold up for five years. The layout of the “villages” attracted so many of us to Peachtree City. The uniqueness of young people walking to their nearby schools, and parents picking up their kids in golf carts rather than cars – choosing not to add to traffic and emissions – even gets national media attention. Let’s be honest, it’s the accessibility of golf carts, the network of paths and proximity to attractions and conveniences that help Peachtree City earn national rankings like “Best Places to Live.” Will the men and women of the board of education consider these same factors when drawing Peachtree City’s school boundary lines? If one recommendation stands, more parents will have to drive their cars further to a new school while their neighbor in the subdivision behind them will head in a different direction towards another school. How does that promote golf cart accessibility and close proximity? We ask that the members of the board of education choose to leave Georgian Park students at Kedron and move the least amount of children in the county as possible. There has to be a better way of making rezoning work than moving one out of every fourth child or more to a new school. Larry and Rita Smith Peachtree City, Ga. login to post comments |
