FCHS gets threat rumors along with McIntosh

Search warrant for McIntosh weapon turns up empty; 3 officers patrolling McIntosh ... 2 officers at FCHS

Fayette County High School hasn't been immune to receiving rumors of threats against the school, officials said.

The rumors are on the heels of trouble reported in Peachtree City where two girls were arrested by police after they threatened online to shoot up McIntosh High School.

Police are investigating at least one of the rumors at FCHS for possible criminal prosecution. Principal Dr. Charles Warr has had to discipline several students for spreading false rumors among the school, said schools spokesperson Melinda Berry-Driesbach.

Berry-Driesbach said Warr has investigated each claim but none have turned out to be legitimate.

Though the two girls from the McIntosh incident remain in jail, ominous text messages zipped between students at McIntosh High School Wednesday, warning students to leave the school by lunchtime, which prompted many parents to check their kids out of school, officials reported.

Wednesday's text messages added to the emotional edge that many McIntosh students were already on. The two girls accused of making the online threats were arrested Monday, police said, and remain in jail and unidentified as they are juveniles under Georgia law.

The situation appears to have calmed down considerably today at McIntosh, officials indicated.

Officials initially were unable to determine where Wednesday’s text messages originated, but if the initial sender is identified, they could face criminal charges also, police and school officials said.

“It could be someone who just wanted to get out of school,” said Peachtree City Police Chief James Murray.

Murray said police are following up on all credible leads, even the ones that came from text messages, but so far none have turned out to be legitimate. Police even served a search warrant at a home Wednesday looking for a weapon, but none was found there, Murray said.

School officials interviewed students who were friends of the two girls who have been arrested for threatening on a MySpace web site to shoot up the school, Berry-Driesbach said. Because they were unable to confirm who sent the original message Wednesday, school officials couldn’t take any action to remove them from campus, Berry-Driesbach said.

The text message that led to the panic was forwarded several times at least, officials said.

The school was on a heightened alert Wednesday with rumors flying about friends of the two arrested girls threatening to carry out the shooting. In response, teachers manned the halls between classes and a number of police officers were present in the morning to help everyone feel safe.

Also the school asked police to continually patrol the outside of campus too to make sure everything was safe, Berry-Driesbach said.

“We are doing everything we know to have a safe environment at McIntosh,” Berry-Driesbach said.

Berry-Driesbach said its important for students to report any suspicious activity they see or suspicious information they hear, even if it’s second, third or fourth-hand. The information should be shared with a parent, teacher or school administrator, she said.

Conversely, anyone spreading unfounded rumors is only helping to increase the fear of everyone at the school, which is counter-productive, she added.

In other words, share your gossip with everyone except your fellow students.

They don't ask much of kids nowadays, do they?

Ask the old dudes like Muddle and Hutch...What would have happened to them if they spread rumors at the school of "something going down"?

Again--- the good ole days would have directed attention to the focal point of resolution--- that would be the hindquarters.
Those days are gone. We need a Mr. Woodcock in every middle school and high school with a complete free pass.

We "old dudes" prefer the term middle aged, it sounds nicer and is closer to the truth. Once again I would like to aknowledge all the well wishes I received for my birthday and my daughter's birthday, Thank You one and all. We do have a sort of family here on this site with all the drama and such that entails.Once again thanks.

I can only say that I was blessed with children who know when they have gone too far. I get "The Look" and they shift into lower gears immediately. I can't imagine having a child who is uncontrollable. God help them if they were my kids.

Both of my sons heard the same thing concerning FCHS.

I contacted the front office this morning....I was told that the student has been "disciplined" and there are two extra officers at the school...regardless, it is still scary for any student and their parents to have to deal with this.

Unfortunately, I believe metal detectors are the next step. Wouldn't bother me if they had them installed....as long as my kids are safe.

Let's not forget that we are talking about children. If we start arresting them every time they say or do something profoundly stupid, the FC jail will be full by Friday afternoon.

Hyper-reactionary behavior is precisely what causes this kind of crap:

My friend, I am afraid that is exactly what jails are for.

They are for when kids (or not so kids) "say or do something profoundly stupid", such as shooting down fellow students as if they were game (think Columbine High School).

Last time I checked, jails are for society to protect itself against lawless citizens, kids or no kids. Probably their parents should be taken there as well, but that is another story for another day.

If the FC jail gets full of that kind of people by Friday pm, "kids" or not so kids, so be it. Better for us if they are in jail than to be in the loose, and us having to hide behind high walls and barred windows in our homes and schools because of them. They are the ones that "need" a jail (and any "social taming" program anyone wants to dish at them), not the rest of us.

Finally, last time I checked how a human body that does not defend itself against destructive agents is described, it was not a healthy body, but one with HIV AIDS. Let us not get to that stage.

>> "say or do ... such as ... Columbine High School"

Nice attempt to blend concepts. Shooting down fellow students is a criminal action. It is to *DO* something stupid. Saying something stupid (particularly from a child) is a different matter entirely.

As for the result of hyper reactionism, look at what has happened at THREE FC schools today. The kids figured it out faster that you did. They clearly see that you have granted them the POWER to make a simple statement and get a huge reaction that benefits them. Now, if they want to be checked out early by their reactionary parents, they just need to get a rumor started.

Think people...

No person shall be convicted under this subsection on the uncorroborated testimony of the party to whom the threat is communicated.

I hate to think of jailing kids but I have to agree with AK.
Perhaps if these kids understand that even a joke (verbal, text message, e-mail) between friends can lend you in jail it would curtail some of this activity. Kind of like when i was a kid. I behaved because I knew that if I did act up, I would get a "whoopin'" when I got home.
I'm affraid that it still wouldn't prevent those who are truley determined to follow through with this sort of activity. I don't know the answer to that one. Kids todaylive in a different world than we grew up in.
