Smola supporter: What is Rehwaldt’s moral basis?Tue, 10/30/2007 - 4:42pm
By: Letters to the ...
In an article appearing in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on April 21, 2002, Don Rehwaldt (candidate for mayor in Tyrone) states that he believes that the central doctrine of faith and organized religion (any faith or religion) is based on folklore and bunk. He states that he believes that a person doesn’t have to accept things they can’t prove — “I wasn’t there. I didn’t see it. It may have happened and it may not have,” he says, referring to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At the recent Tyrone candidates forum, he stated that “God did not write the Bible, men did.” While I believe every man is entitled to his opinion, I strongly believe that those opinions formulate Mr. Rehwaldt’s method of thinking and therefore his method of thinking will impact the decisions he would make for our community. If he disavows religion and historical facts, what influences his morality, ethics and principles? He claims to be the “ethical” candidate and campaigns on the platform of ethical government. If he and his associates believe Tyrone currently operates under an unethical government, why has no one filed an ethics complaint in all the years his opponent Mike Smola has served? His hearsay and innuendo is damaging to each individual it is directed at and to the community we live in. Just because a decision his opponent makes does not please him or his special interest group does not make it an unethical or wrong decision. I am very active in my church. I belong to a multi-faceted Christian organization that supports this community through organized volunteerism in providing special projects for the needy in our community. While I support the right of all people to practice their religion, it is my opinion that a lack of a higher standard impacts us tremendously. I have known Mike Smola for many years and I have never heard him say anything bad about anyone, including those who have attacked him. As many of you know, Mike Smola has stood side by side many of us in this community. I may not always agree with him, but when I have asked him about different things that affect Tyrone, it is quite apparent that he has researched the matter and put a lot of thought into his vote. He is a good and honest man who cares deeply about this community. I am voting for Mike Smola for mayor of Tyrone on Tuesday, Nov. 6, and I am urging you to do the same.
