The funeral for Fayette State Rep. Dan Lakly, R-Peachtree City, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Peachtree City.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Mowell Funeral Home in Peachtree CIty.

Lakly, 65, died Monday of a heart attack while he was hospitalized for treatment of a broken wrist, state officials said. Lakly had suffered the initial injury falling off a ladder Friday.

Lakly has a long history of public service in elected office, also serving on the Peachtree City Council and on the Fayette County Commission.

Fayette County government offices have lowered their flags to half-mast in Lakly's memory. Friday, Gov. Sonny Perdue is expected to order all state agencies to do the same.

Lakly served as the vice chairman of the house Defense & Veterans Affairs committee and also was chairman of the Information and Audits committee.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee, and their grown children.

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue said the following Monday about Lakly:

“Mary and I were deeply saddened to hear of Dan’s sudden passing. We offer our sympathies and condolences to his wife, Donna Lee, and his entire family. Dan was a champion for the people of Fayette County and leaves behind a legacy of service to his community and all of Georgia’s citizens. He will be greatly missed.”

Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson today issued the following statement regarding the passing of Rep. Lakly:

It is with overwhelming sadness that I have just learned of the passing of my colleague Representative Dan Lakly. Although recently re-elected to office, he was no newcomer. He served his district with great pride and hard work for many years. I had the privilege of working with Dan on many occasions and for many years. I learned first-hand what a kind, caring, and gracious person he truly was.

As Chairman of the Information and Audits Committee and Vice Chairman of the Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee, Representative Lakly worked tirelessly to help not only his constituents but all Georgians. He set a great example for us all, and it will be impossible to replace his tenacity. The memory of his service to Georgia will be honored by not only his family but also a grateful district and state.

During this difficult time we must draw upon the strength of one another. He will be greatly missed by his family, his community, the many whose lives he has touched, and all of us in the Georgia House. I ask that you please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

Following is an e-mail from Ga. Sen Mitch Seabaugh R-Sharpsburg, who previously served with Lakly as a member of Fayette's delegation when his district was formerly part of Peachtree City.

I have known Rep. Lakly for 13 years, dating back to when I used to attend Conservative Policy Caucus meetings before I was elected. Rep. Lakly was an active participant in those meetings strongly advocating conservative principles and policies.

Dan was well known for his heart for public service for his community. He was a tireless and determined campaigner. He also was willing to take bold and courageous stands on behalf of his constituents.

The thing I will remember most is that if I was heading into a battle, I would want Dan on my side because he wasn't intimidated of or tired from a fight. He would stick by you in the foxhole. Georgia has lost a great public servant today.

Leah and I and my family extend our deepest sympathy to Donna and his family. We will lift them up in our prayers.

Following is biographical information taken directly from Lakly's web site:

Dan Lakly was elected to the 72nd District in 2004, but he also previously served in the Georgia House from 1992-1998. Mr. Lakly serves as Chairman of the Information and Audits Committee. Chairman Lakly is also a member of the Defense and Veterans Affairs, Banks and Banking, Human Relations and Aging, and the State Planning and Community Affairs Committees.

Chairman Lakly served in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1965. Additional public service includes terms on the Peachtree City Council and the Fayette County Board of Commissioners. He is a long time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, and was previously a Kiwanis member for 13 years.

Chairman Lakly moved to Peachtree City in 1978, and raised his family there. He is married to Donna Lee, and they have three sons and four grandchildren. Chairman Lakly’s three boys all went to UGA, and all three graduated from McIntosh High School in Peachtree City. Mr. Lakly is an independent commercial mortgage broker.

Far too young and far too sudden/unexpected.

My condolences to the family as well.

This upsetting bit of the news story raises questions:

Lakly, 65, died Monday of a heart attack while he was hospitalized for treatment of a broken wrist, state officials said. Lakly had suffered the initial injury falling off a ladder Friday.

This sort of thing just isn't supposed to happen. What in the world went wrong during this gentleman's hospitalization? Was there a prior heart condition?

Your husband and father is the person responsible for me forming this successful business in 1993. Dan of course, will be sorely missed by us all. His efforts in the legislature allowed me to become state certified in the Georgia Drugs Don't Work Program 15 years, ago. My family and I will be eternally grateful to Dan's efforts on our behalf. He never did anything halfway, it was always 100% wide open or not at all. God Bless you all! Paul & Elizabeth Hagan.

We have lost a great person with the passing of Dan lakly. The history goes back to his first running with Peachtree City. As a child Mr. Dan would have the kids, including myself walking around the parking lots of Peachtree City putting flyers on cars. I would never of thought that the political trail would go to the State. The memories between then and now are endless. A great assest to the Government and community has been lost but NEVER FORGOTTON. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna, Danny, David, Donald, and their families.

Who can ever forget Dan standing at the intersections of Highways 54 and 85, and/or most any other busy intersection around, during his run for State Rep. Dan in his colorful T-Shirts (yellow and red ones I think) that said VOTE LAKLY, waving at cars with his sign that said VOTE DAN LAKLY. As folks would sit in their cars trying not to make eye contact with Dan, he would then enact his little attention getting plan. Dan would then flip his sign over, displaying a second message that read: WILL WORK FOR VOTES. Immediately big grinning smiles would jump on the faces of those passer-byers as they went along their way. Smiling

Dan, I will miss you. You were a true American, friend and family man. You always represented the Conservative movement with honor and integrity, in addition to being a hard worker and fighter for the causes you believed in. Such as our loss of Paul Heard, God has brought you into his presence way too early in life. I suppose the good do die young. Thank you.... I will miss you.

Dear Donna and family, Mrs. Git and I extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family during the loss of your husband, dad and friend.

I have lost a good friend this morning with the passing of Dan Lakly. I just had breakfast with him this past Saturday morning, and I am shocked that he is no longer with us.

He was a true and unique individual. Although we had breakfast most everyday with friends, and although we discussed events and issues and we didn't always agree, I found him to be one of the most honest, caring, and sincere men that I have ever met.

We are both members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion posts, and I can honestly say that Dan was a true Patriot. All Veterans salute Dan for his service both to the USA, and to his constituents. He felt strongly about serving both.

Dan will be missed not just by my family and me, but by our morning breakfast friends, and fellow Fayette County citizens.

God Bless you Dan, your wife Donna, and your family.

Although Page and I did not have an opportunity to meet Dan on more than just a few occasions, he always struck us as a very warm and personable man. His long dedication to public service is a matter of record and will be missed, but undoubtedly not as much as the loss that his family must feel this day.

Our deepest sympathies and regrets.

Dan was a great public servant, and did great work for Fayette county by keepin the "at large" voting in place. He will be sorely missed.

Our condolences to the Lakly Family during this time of grief.

Unlike so many politicians, Dan would respond to a question or comment within 24 hours -- and would do it personally! He was a caring gentleman who seriously felt that he was REPRESENTING (in all capital letters) his constituents.

His constituents will miss him.

Someone said "He was a good man, and would help you if you asked" - and that is so true!

My thoughts and prayers are with Donna and all the children.

I had the opportunity last Thursday night to spend a couple of hours with Dan discussing HR900. As usual, Dan was able to comment on a number of different perspectives and approaches to an issue. In addition to the knowledge Dan brought to the table I will miss his keen sense of humor. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife and children.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dan's death. He always promptly answered my emails personally and asked questions that showed that he thought about my positions and was open to learning more. He was gracious and a friend to those who have worked so selflessly for many conservative causes. He will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to the Lakly family. May God comfort you during this time.

I am so sorry to learn of Dan Lakly's passing.

I met Dan Lakly back in the 80's when he was a Fayette County Commissioner. My husband and I needed help with a neighborhood issue. I spoke at one of the commission meetings asking for help. Mr. Lakly responded immediately. He was a big help to us, made follow up calls to check on how things were going etc.

He was a good man and would help you if you asked.

My deepest sympathy to his family.

Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family at this very difficult time. We are all better to have known such a public servant, and Dan surely could not have accomplished all that he did without your love and support. As your friends and family surround you with love during this difficult period, I pray that you find peace in the many memories of shared successes and trials alike, knowing that more people than you can possibly know have benefited from this man and his life's work. God be with you, and know that you enjoy the prayers and support of us all during this difficult time.
