Councilwoman Caldwell: Smola needs to get his facts straight about big boxesTue, 10/23/2007 - 4:14pm
By: Letters to the ...
I wish to correct the statements made by Mike Smola appearing in the Oct. 17, 2007 edition of The Citizen. Mr. Smola’s misstatement is the discussion of the big box ordinance which he states took place at a planning retreat earlier this year. In fact, the first discussion concerning the big box ordinance was at a regular public town council meeting on April 19, 2007, agenda item 5. Subsequent discussion and vote took place at a regular public town council meeting on July 5, 2007, agenda item 5. Mr. Smola’s misleading statement is he “saw no problems with big boxes.” Please read the approved town council minutes of July 5, 2007. I stated that I had no problems with the recommended text amendment. “Therefore she (Grace Caldwell) made a motion to approve of the text amendment to the zoning ordinance limiting size of retail commercial including standards for a variance.” “Councilwoman Caldwell felt the town needed to do what the planner suggested in order protect the town from future lawsuits.” The vote was 4-0 in favor of adopting the big box ordinance. Mr. Smola stated, “I drafted an ordinance” etc. It is legal counsel’s responsibility to draft all legal documents. Mr. Smola states, “Caldwell fought it right up to the time we voted on it.” The approved council minutes do not reflect Mr. Smola’s assertion. However, Mr. Smola and I have differences of opinions on many issues. Mr. Smola is correct in his statement, “... since Caldwell is actively and visibly campaigning for my opponent.” In America we have the constitutional right for free speech and public expression. I had no problem when Mr. Smola publicly endorsed my opponent, Sheryl Lee for mayor in 2004. The town of Tyrone has many important issues which the town council and mayor must address. It is my belief that Mr. Rehwaldt has a good understanding of the issues at hand and possesses the professional expertise and willingness to help implement the proper solution to these important issues. To quote my favorite U. S. President, Ronald Reagan’s farewell address to the nation in 1989, “We the people tell the government what to do, it doesn’t tell us. We the people are the driver, the government is the car. and we decide where it should go, and by what route, and how fast.” Grace Caldwell Town Council Tyrone, Ga. login to post comments |
