Fayette remains undefeated, pounds Creekside 28-0Fri, 10/12/2007 - 10:15pm

Fayette County’s vastly underrated defense might have earned a new nickname — the “Black and Gold Swarm” defense.
Fayette’s defense forced a season-high six turnovers, four of which set up touchdowns, in the undefeated Tigers’ 28-0 thrashing of Creekside in a key Region 2-AAAA game Friday at the Swamp in Fairburn. Fayette’s wide margin of victory was made possible by its opportunistic defense, which recorded its second shutout of the season and held Creekside to 88 yards of total offense and five first downs. Shemar Fletcher (fumble recovery), Cuincy Carruthers (interception), Marquis Dixon (interception), Evan Reid (fumble recovery), Matt Daniels (interception) and Chad Jones (fumble recovery) had Fayette’s turnovers. Fayette's defense ended Creekside's first three possessions in the second half by forcing turnovers. Each turnover set up a Fayette touchdown. “Turnovers play a role in any game,” Fayette coach Tommy Webb said. “I’m just glad we were on the end of forcing turnovers versus having the turnovers on offense. I credit our defense for executing a great game plan and playing tenacious and causing these turnovers. They were big tonight for us.” Said Fayette’s hard-hitting safety, Daniels: “I would say it was our best defensive performance of the season. Our defensive coaches said, ‘Shut these guys out.’ That’s what we did. Nobody was selfish. “Everybody played well. We came out and did what we had to do.” Creekside (5-2, 3-2 in the region) had won three straight against Fayette (6-0, 4-0 in the region), but the Seminoles were facing the best Tigers team by far in recent memory Friday, and it showed, though it took awhile for Fayette’s offense to bust out. Fayette (6-0, 4-0 in Region 2-AAAA) held only a 7-0 lead at halftime, with its lone touchdown coming on a 39-yard run by quarterback Brandon Boykin on which he raced down the left sideline and dove into the end zone from within the 5-yard line. Fayette’s first forced turnover, a fumble recovery by Fletcher, occurred one play before Boykin’s touchdown run. The surging Tigers tore apart Creekside’s defense in the second half, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Fayette’s touchdowns, set up by turnovers forced by its defense, came on 3-yard runs by Daniels, Tim Pettaway and Jalani Williams. Fayette’s top two offensive weapons, Boykin (13 rushes, 86 yards) and Daniels (19 rushes, 77 yards), were both held to under 100 yards rushing in the same game for the first time this season. But Fayette’s offense worked with a short field all night thanks to its defense, and the Tigers still finished with 244 rushing yards. It was an impressive offensive display by the Tigers, especially considering Creekside’s defense had entered the game as the stingiest in the region, allowing only 4.2 points per game. login to post comments |
