Fayette remains undefeated, pounds Creekside 28-0

Fayette County’s vastly underrated defense might have earned a new nickname — the “Black and Gold Swarm” defense.

Fayette’s defense forced a season-high six turnovers, four of which set up touchdowns, in the undefeated Tigers’ 28-0 thrashing of Creekside in a key Region 2-AAAA game Friday at the Swamp in Fairburn.

Fayette’s wide margin of victory was made possible by its opportunistic defense, which recorded its second shutout of the season and held Creekside to 88 yards of total offense and five first downs. Shemar Fletcher (fumble recovery), Cuincy Carruthers (interception), Marquis Dixon (interception), Evan Reid (fumble recovery), Matt Daniels (interception) and Chad Jones (fumble recovery) had Fayette’s turnovers.

Fayette's defense ended Creekside's first three possessions in the second half by forcing turnovers. Each turnover set up a Fayette touchdown.

“Turnovers play a role in any game,” Fayette coach Tommy Webb said. “I’m just glad we were on the end of forcing turnovers versus having the turnovers on offense. I credit our defense for executing a great game plan and playing tenacious and causing these turnovers. They were big tonight for us.”

Said Fayette’s hard-hitting safety, Daniels: “I would say it was our best defensive performance of the season. Our defensive coaches said, ‘Shut these guys out.’ That’s what we did. Nobody was selfish.

“Everybody played well. We came out and did what we had to do.”

Creekside (5-2, 3-2 in the region) had won three straight against Fayette (6-0, 4-0 in the region), but the Seminoles were facing the best Tigers team by far in recent memory Friday, and it showed, though it took awhile for Fayette’s offense to bust out.

Fayette (6-0, 4-0 in Region 2-AAAA) held only a 7-0 lead at halftime, with its lone touchdown coming on a 39-yard run by quarterback Brandon Boykin on which he raced down the left sideline and dove into the end zone from within the 5-yard line.

Fayette’s first forced turnover, a fumble recovery by Fletcher, occurred one play before Boykin’s touchdown run.

The surging Tigers tore apart Creekside’s defense in the second half, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Fayette’s touchdowns, set up by turnovers forced by its defense, came on 3-yard runs by Daniels, Tim Pettaway and Jalani Williams.

Fayette’s top two offensive weapons, Boykin (13 rushes, 86 yards) and Daniels (19 rushes, 77 yards), were both held to under 100 yards rushing in the same game for the first time this season. But Fayette’s offense worked with a short field all night thanks to its defense, and the Tigers still finished with 244 rushing yards.

It was an impressive offensive display by the Tigers, especially considering Creekside’s defense had entered the game as the stingiest in the region, allowing only 4.2 points per game.

Football team is now ranked #9 in AJC 4-AAAA polls, and has been on the coaches poll for several weeks now. Go Tigers.

We should be higher. I would sure like see the criteria that they used to determine the rankings. At least we know who our competition is. We have five more games. It sure would be nice to have the first playoff game here.Smiling

WoooHooo!! The Tigers are on the prowl, literally. Gotta agree with the posters here, FCHS has not been getting the respect they have earned, much less deserve.

The student population at FCHS represents the real world. I can see students from the newest high school in the county experiencing culture shock when they go off to college or on to real jobs.

We're behind you all the way, Tigers! The Black and Gold Swarm is to be feared! GO TIGERS!!!!!

If you are a Seminole fan, you've had a bad week with teams in Gold and Black (Fayette County is yellow, but close enough). First Wake Forest smacks down FSU and now FCHS gives Creekside a beat-down. Bad week to be a Nole.

Split Decision, I'm glad for FCHS that they are finally having a winning season. Good for them! Your comment "I can see students from the newest high school in the county experiencing culture shock when they go off to college or on to real jobs." leaves me puzzled. Do you really think that somehow, FCHS is all that different from the other high schools in Fayette County? And what does that have to do with a winning football season? Actually, I expect ALL our graduating seniors to have a bit of culture shock when they hit the real world. I know that I did, and that was over 30 years ago, and a different school system. Perhaps you think that FCHS is somehow superior to the other high schools in Fayette, now that they are winning at football. Well here's a news flash--ALL the schools in Fayette are excellent. The faculty at each school is strong, and so is the coaching staff. I know some of the coaches at McIntosh, and they are a fine bunch. I'm sure they are doing the best they can with the kids they got, and in a year or two, they too will have a winning season. Winning seasons come and winning seasons go. Enjoy yours while you can, but there's no reason to get all arrogant about it. You can be justifiably proud of the Tigers. Just leave it at that.

the thread, I was agreeing with a previous remark in a post by a teacher at FCHS, which had nothing to do with football.

I was not being "all arrogant" nor being superior. Bottom line - football is a sport. I realize all the high schools' football teams in Fayette County are having a great year, and that's wonderful. But, FCHS has been the butt of many jokes and nasty comments for more years than I like to remember. I truly believe if any other school in the county were to win the first six games of their season, their fans would be very vocal with support, too.

What a revelation: "winning seasons come and winning seasons go." No football team knows that better than FCHS. Apparently, you totally misunderstood my post.

I was questioning your comment that students from FCHS represent the real world, and students from "the newest high school in the county" were going to experience culture shock when they got out into the real world. I happen to know that the demographics at FCHS and Whitewater are not much different at all, and neither is the quality of the education that students are getting at either school. So I was puzzled by your comment.

Anyway, I am sincerely glad that your team is doing so well. Have a good night!

Good commentary River, I have one son at WHS and one that just graduated; indeed the school's demographics are no different than any other school in the county. The previous poster should have done some homework before hitting the submit button.

I am so proud of Shemar, Cuincy, Matt D and all of the Tigers!
Our school has not gotten the respect that it deserves because so many people in Fayette County are scared for their children to go to school with people who have dark skin. These are wonderful young men who have bright futures! I am proud to say that I had some of them in my classroom. FCHS provides a safe environment where learning is the top priority!

Congratulations Tigers! Some of my Tiger family members were at Creekside for the game. I agree, the Tigers are not getting the recognition they deserve. At least Fox 5 was there and did a report.Smiling

Did I miss Hutch's weekly score prediction? I've been really busy. Today I helped a friend put up signs, and hand out flyers for someone who's running for a council seat. Boy did we get an earful! We had a lot of fun . More on that later! Smiling

I haven't made a prediction in a couple of weeks now, but I'll admit I wouldn't have predicted this score. The Tigers are stronger then I would have guessed and they definitly don't get the respect they deserve. By the way, to dollar or zitpicker or whatever you're calling yourself this week, or day, for the Tigers, bite me, or them.

I did not attend the air show, but as I was driving toward Starr's Mill this afternoon, I got the thrill of seeing a Stealth aircraft making an approach. The plane banked at a sharp angle and really did disappear. It looked as thin as a piece of paper! It was amazing to see!

I remember a few years back I seen the B29, B25, and B17 make a low altitude run near PTC. I'm sure glad there is enough interest to keep these historic aircraft flying. It's a tribute to all that flew and maintained them. My dad was a crew chief on a B25 during Korea.

Rabunator is correct - the color of the skin doesn't matter. This team personifies what the word "teamwork" really means. All of them are a great group of young men.

I'd like to give props to some of the players never mentioned but are a HUGE part of this team: Luis Martinez, Trey Carter, Drew Burkett, Jervai McConico, BaRack Little. There are many more who need to be mentioned because it takes every single one of them contributing to this season's wins.

GO TIGERS - WE LOVE YOU - WE'RE PROUD OF ALL OF YOU!!!!
