PTC waving fee for overdue court skippers

To help clear a backlog of almost 600 unpaid bench warrants and license suspensions, the Peachtree City Municipal Court will waive the failure to appear in court fee, $55, for each warrant from Sept. 12 or earlier that is paid.

Failing to appear on the initial court date adds the $55 fee, which can more than double the original cost of the ticket for several minor offenses, noted Municipal Court Judge Stephen Ott.

The city court processes more than 10,000 citations per year, but the 600 outstanding cases will remain unresolved until the person applies for a new job or a new driver’s license or is pulled over for an otherwise routine traffic stop, officials said. Those cases have piled up over a 10-year period, officials said.

“If someone has a bench warrant or suspended license for failure to appear and are pulled over for something as simple as a seatbelt check, they will be arrested and taken to jail,” Ott said.

Payments must be paid at the city court office at City Hall on Willowbend Road between office hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Payment may only be made with cash or a money order for all citations with warrants for failure to appear.

This waving of fees must be a funny sight!

Actually, you meant "waiving." You wave a flag. But you waive a fee.
