Ken Burns - The War

Has anyone seen this series yet? It's currently on PBS 8. We owe so much to them. Those that participated are truly America's greatest generation.

You might also check out the book SELECTED CHAFF: THE WARTIME COLUMNS OF AL MCINTOSH.

McIntosh is voiced by Tom Hanks in "The War." The book is a great example of wartime journalism on a local level. You rarely see writing like that these days.

Ken Burns and Geoffrey Ward have both endorsed the columns in the book.

I don't have cable or anything that will bring a signal into my house. I'm hoping to find it real soon on 'streaming video'.

I can't wait to see it. The heroes (historical treasures) have just about all moved on from this life. I miss several of these heroes that impacted my life in an awesome way. I can only be thankful for their sacrifices as there was never a need for myself and many others to give so much as these men did.

Is it as good as the one Ken did on the civil war?

I saw all of the episodes except for one and I've thoroughly enjoyed them. If you've seen Ken Burns before, this is another typical Ken Burns documentary: top notch stuff! I enjoyed learning more about some of the Pacific battles like why Iwo Jima was important strategically since it was needed for bombing of Japan.

I don't have cable or anything that will bring a signal into my house.

Don't know if you can get it this far from ATL, but PBS is over the air so you can get it for free.

I'm hoping to find it real soon on 'streaming video'.

It's at Blockbuster too. Eye-wink

Is it as good as the one Ken did on the civil war?

Oh, definitely if not better because unlike the War of Northern Aggression Eye-wink there are still vets and civilians still around who can share their personal stories and views on the war.

Please make sure you see it soon, Git!

We've been watching this and have been reminded of the sacrifice of these men and their families. The series is well done (despite being on PBS), especially the personal accounts. The first night had a lot about Pearl Harbor (had a relative there -- only 17 or 18 and a medic who saw his best friend blown up) and Bataan. Reminds you that some people just don't want peace and are very cruel and just how great this country is. Missed tonight's episode, though.

I don't see that it's available at the library yet, but here's a link to the PBS site -- Ken Burns' "The War." You can read the biographies and other info. A lot of pictures to look at, too.

Here's the schedule for the next showing.

#1 A Necessary War (December 1941-December 1942) -- The first year of American involvement in World War II. Wednesday, October 03, 9:00 PM

"I don't think there is such a thing as a good war. There are sometimes necessary wars. And I think one might say 'just' wars. I never questioned the necessity of that war. And I still do not question it. It was something that had to be done."
- Sam Hynes

#2 When Things Get Tough (January 1943-December 1943) -- The events of 1943 are chronicled. Wednesday, October 10, 9:00 PM

#3 A Deadly Calling (November 1943-June 1944) --

#4 Pride Of Our Nation (June 1944-August 1944) -- Thursday, October 4, 8:00pm

#5 FUBAR (September 1944-December 1944) -- In Europe, Allied forces face a fuel shortage. Sunday, October 07, 1:00 PM

#6 The Ghost Front (December 1944-March 1945) -- The Battle of the Bulge, a German counteroffensive. Sunday, October 07, 3:30 PM

"7 A World Without War (March 1945-September 1945) -- The final months of World War II are chronicled. Sunday, October 07, 5:30 PM

Ken Burns' desire was to interview as many as possible to tell their stories. Only those of front-line and those of the home-front were interviewed. These were the "ordinary" people that truly are super heroes. I'm sometimes sadden that we as a nation are slipping from the heights that they struggled to reach.

Now, what's this you don't have cable? Do you live in Billy Goat Acres? Do you need money?

on" makes me feel almost inadequate. These truly are great people who stpeped up to the plate. The entire nation sacrificed and felt like part of the effort. We are such a narsacistic society these days; so self absorbed. I don't know that we could ever fill the shoes of these great people. Thanks for bringing it to the boards.
