Police: Bikes, golf carts must yield to traffic

The Peachtree City Police Department wants to remind residents on how Georgia traffic laws apply to the city’s path system, particularly where the paths cross over city streets.

Georgia law requires motorists to stop for pedestrians when they are inside or approaching a crosswalk, regardless of whether the person is walking, running or otherwise afoot. The auto must remain stopped as the pedestrian crosses through the crosswalk, police said.

But bikes, golf carts and other authorized vehicles on the path system are not considered as pedestrians under the law, police said. At crosswalks, those vehicles must come to a stop and yield to traffic on the road, police said.

A Powerpoint presentation on crosswalks is available online at www.gahighwaysafety.org/peds.

The police department has several traffic safety programs including programs for students at local schools, road safety checkpoints and saturation patrols. For more information, send an email to traffic@ptcgovernment.org or call patrol commander Capt. Terry Ernst at 770-487-8866.

I am so glad for this article finally someone besides myself does not like being run over by golf carts. I just hope that people will do what they are suppose to. Please teach you kids to have respect, I do try with my own, he';s not perfect- and who knows what choices he makes when I am not around.I know I do try and talk and teach him when he is with me. We parents are their examples daily. Let;s make this a proud place to live by our examples.
