It was a different kind of swearing in ceremony. Members of Peachtree City Police SWAT team and newly formed Fayetteville Police SWAT team were sworn in for each other’s city by Judge W. Fletcher Sams in a 1 p.m. ceremony at the Fayette County Justice Center.

A mutual aid agreement has been signed between Peachtree City’s SWAT, or special response, team and the team from Fayetteville which has now become operational.

Both Fayetteville Chief Steve Heaton and Peachtree City Chief James Murray said the agreement was a good fit for the two nationally accredited agencies.

Accredited agencies hun? Let me tell you what being accredited does for a department. It protects the department from being sued by placing all of the liability on the officer. It places rule after rule on an officer in an attempt to have a written solution to every problem that may possibly arise. This probably sounds like a GOOD thing, doesn't it? Except, in life, especially on the job, nothing can be totally prepared for because the dirtbag criminal doesn't follow your pretty little guidelines.

Sooner or later, the accredited officer will have to react to a situation. The incident may even involve deadly force. What accreditiation will do for an officer will be to make him hesitate at the moment of truth. You may say, well, now, thats all part of the job. Yeah, thats true if thats the kind of agency you want to work for. But, change that situation to where YOU have been taken hostage and THAT ACCREDITED OFFICER is the one trying to save your life. Or the life of a loved one. That probably hits home a little more doesn't it?

I am not dogging out ANY AGENCY that is accredited. If any agency whats to be or stay accredited, then GOD BLESS EM and good luck. My problem is with ACCREDITATION itself. It destroys morale. It makes it almost impossible to do your job because you are knee deep in unnecessary paperwork and memos.

You don't want to do anything productive. So, you get a REACTIVED agency instead of a PROACTIVE one. Do you want the "law" to react to a burglary at your house, or keep it from happening in the first place? What an agency ends up doing is writing tickets, all the time, instead of looking for the guy slinging dope or robbing Dollar Stores. Does this sound familiar?

I am a Fayette County Tax payer, just like all the rest of you. And I am here to tell you that I have worked for both an accredited agency and one that wasn't. You get more done with an agency thats more worried about crime, then paperwork and NASCAR stickers on the sides of their cars.

I tell you what you need to do with all of those memos, rules and guidelines. You take about three hundred of those papers, place them in your shirt and pray that they stop that Forty caliber slug that hits you in the chest. You will need the extra protection because you will be too busy trying to remember how to departmentally handle an armed suspect. Save the trees baby!

That explains alot about PTC cops.

The Sheriff's Dept. is always proactive and ready to help any citizen that calls. They do take the average taxpayers complaints about crime seriously.

Like Forrest Gump, you said it all...you said it all.

Never heard anything negative, other than from MAJ Gooden, the FPD Major. It must be envy...or maybe not. Johnny Roberts is long gone, but his policies are still close by!!!

Thankgoodness for nationally accredited agencies and their teams. Certainly wouldn't want a "bunch of cowboys" out there protecting us. After all, cowboys are all about doing the job and aren't so concerned about properly filling out the forms or making sure everyone at the command post is happy.
These statements are in no way meant to insult the operators, for the cowboy and the accredited are both the victims of their politicians.

It's sad that being accredited kept Fayetteville and Peachtree city from training with the sheriff's office SWAT team. They are scumbag tested; mother approved. I have trained with these guys, and they are nothing but excellent operators. They are highly motivated, extremely professional, and dedicated to their craft. As a matter of fact, wasn't it fayette county SWAT members I saw on channel 2 that disarmed the suicidal woman at the bowling alley in Fayetteville? Nothing against either citys team, but the S/O team has a lot of experience they could have shared with the newly formed teams.

I did not see anyone saying anything negative about the Sheriff's SWAT team and I have heard they are great. Maybe the question should be is why is the Sheriff's Department not accredited. Might be a good point for the next election to see which person running is in favor of getting this honor. Seems to me it would be easy for them to meet the standards with the fine department they have.

It's a picky point and not incredibly important, but only one of the teams is newly formed. PTC has had a team for at least 8-10 years that I'm aware of.

I didn't know P/tree city had a SWAT team before now.
