Thursday was a good night all around for Tyrone Police Capt. Brandon Perkins. The Tyrone Town Council hired the veteran officer as the town’s new police chief to take the place of outgoing Chief David Mullis.

Perkins began his tenure with Tyrone Police in 1999 after working as an officer in Fairburn and Union City and as a dispatcher in Fairburn.

Set to begin his new job later this month, Perkins brings with him significant experience in law enforcement training, an A.S. degree in Criminal Justice and is working toward a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration.

Speaking about the council decision after the meeting, Perkins thanked the mayor and council for providing him the opportunity to serve as chief and he thanked Chief Mullis for his guidance over the years and his service to the town.

When they picked Mullis they waited about 6 months after the old chief had left. This was a very hurried up deal. Two people voted against, and guess who they were. Perkins was hand picked by Barry, Lee, Smola and Valerie. They knew if they waited till the elections in Nov., the out come would be different. Everytime you go to a meeting Perkins was there. Can you spell suck up? There was someone else who should have been picked who Barry didn't like, or should I say, didn't like his family for nothing they had done, quite to the contrary. Barry just has to drain the last little power he can muster by holding on to the police department. You know Perkins and Mayor Lee favor, same body type, and coloring, wander what kin they are? It is a ...very....small town you know.

You know beach bear, there are reasons you have been passed up time and time again, it's your poor attitude. Keep it up, we now know we made the right decision.

Perkins is a class act, good luck to him.

Concerned Citizen, "Keep it up,..WE? now know we made the right decision"? Did you vote on Thursday night? You must have, or at least had some say so in it, which is more than you can say for the rest of us. A quote from the paper that is thrown out at your house, not the online one, "In relation to the hire, Caldwell said the position should have been advertised, adding that she believed the appointment was in violation of equal employment opportunity regulations and that a resume from a more qualified individual had been received." She went on to say that she was never given a copy of the resumes from other candidates. In other words, 'the gruesome three some' meaning Smola, Let, and Lee, along with Barry and Val, had probably decided this was who ..THEY..or should I say [you and them] wanted. It was put under the councils nose with no other candidates resumes, even though others were sent in. Also, she was objecting to not letting others know of the vacancy who might be more qualified. Again, a handfull of people are trying to control the power in this town. In my eyes, the selection wasn't legal. There were no other candidates to vote on! Jesus! The old chief hasn't been gone even a week! How do we know they didn't ..ASK.. him to leave so they could put their/your guy in? We don't, and probably never will. This is the kind of thing that irks most people in Tyrone, their choices are taken away from them by a handfull. The last election showed how unhappy people were and how much they believed in Gloria Furr and Grace Caldwell. They both wipped the pants of everybody else running. These two people were forced to vote on something they had no idea was going to be voted on untill they got there, then they were given no other candidates! How is that for stacking the deck!

concerned citizen...that is really funny as I dont/never have, worked for the police, so Ginger/Valerie/Janet, I doubt you could pass me over, AND LET ME SAY, I WOULD NEVER put myself in a position where you could ever make an assesment of me. I did graduate and dont have evening errands to run.

You have put yourself in a position to be assessed, you suffer from whats known as sour grapes. Since you don't have errands to run, perhaps you could put some of that "graduate" mind power behind some research on being a sore loser.

Who would attack the new boss before he even takes office? Only the crybaby loser....you.

Concerned Citizen, you missed the point. The issue is not whether Mr. Perkins will make a good Tyrone Police Chief. He may be the very best choice. The issue is, there was no choice. No advertising for the position. No public discussion, no due process, citizens in the dark, secret government. Amos, Fowler, Lee, Smola & Letourneau got together and decided who they wanted for Chief and put it to a vote in a secret "executive session" as "personnel" on the Agenda. The Councilwomen were not informed and were blindsided with the old 3-2 vote. The only ways to stop this chicanery is by a State investigation, a lawsuit or elect a new responsible Council. Right now Grace Caldwell & Gloria Furr should ask the Governor and the Fayette District Attorney for an investigation of Tyrone's government practices. Ronnie Chance could be of great help here if he really wants to represent the people.
