Now that the qualifying period is over for Fayette’s municipalities, voters know what the menu will look like when they head to the polls Nov. 6. Peachtree City’s two posts on the five-member city council have drawn seven contenders. (Six of the seven are pictured below. The Citizen was unable to contact the seventh, Mark Hollums, for a photo by deadline.) For Post 1, incumbent Mike Harman, who was appointed to the post by council several weeks ago, will face off against Thomas J. O’Toole Jr. and Don Haddix. Harman, a sales manager for Biorem Environmental, has lived in Peachtree City for nine years. He previously was the chairman of the Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority. O’Toole, an education data management specialist at the Department of Defense Elementary and Secondary Schools has lived here for one year. Haddix, who is “semi-retired” has lived in Peachtree City for 20 years. For Post 2, four challengers will face off including gym owner Dar Thompson, who finished third with 13 percent of the vote in 2005 in a failed mayoral bid. Joining Thompson, a nine-year resident, will be Michael L. King, a commercial account manager for Wade Ford who has lived in Peachtree City for 20 years; Mark Hollums, a commercial property manager who has lived in Peachtree City for 15 years; and Doug Sturbaum, an IT vendor management specialist with Panasonic who has lived in Peachtree City for one year. Councilman Stuart Kourajian previously announced he would not seek re-election to the Post 2 seat. In Fayetteville, Mayor Ken Steele and Post 1 Councilman Wilson Price will run unopposed, and former City Councilman Al Hovey-King will run for the Post 2 seat against sales representative Micky Edwards. Current Post 2 councilman Glenn Brewer previously announced he would not seek re-election. Hovey-King previously served on the Fayetteville City Council but lost his seat to Paul Oddo in 2005. In Tyrone, current Councilman Mike Smola will run for mayor against retiree Don Rehwaldt. Former Tyrone Planning Commission member Ken Matthews faces technology services manager Tracy Young for the Post 1 council seat. Three have qualified for Post 2: recently resigned planning commission member Jesse Nasianceno, consultant Eric Dial and computer security specialist Gordon Shenkle. login to post comments |
