Police: Unlocked cars in Fayetteville easy prey for criminals

Fayetteville police are asking residents to lock their cars and take their belongings inside, as 16 entering auto incidents were reported in the city during August.

Most of the vehicles were parked in residential areas and they were left unlocked by the owner, police said. Although many of the incidents resulted in no items being taken, thieves are now looking for more than the typical electronics and valuables, police said.

“It’s not just electronics and purses they are stealing, it is mail, receipts, even address books,” said Lt. Jeff Harris. “We are finding that thieves are using personal information in vehicles to commit identity theft.”

Police recommend storing items such as cell phones, portable music devices, computers, personal digital assistants and other electronics inside the home along with purses and mail. They can also be left in the trunk, police say.

Police also suggest that the car should be locked, even when it’s in your own driveway, and parked in well-lit locations.

Leaving the car unlocked makes an easy target for a thief, who can be in the car and out of sight before the owner knows what happened, police said.

Police are also urging residents to report any suspicious activity.

I also live in wonderful Fayette County and I think most people here think that if you don't live here your not good enough. I feel safe living here, life is life and crime happens everywhere, by the way your not at the magical kingdom - I wouldn't feel safe at the "Avenue because the same thing happens there. So what do you do? Stay home all the time with doors and windows shut. Please this is life and it's not only Fulton and Clayton counties that cause all the problems. It could be you next door neighbor. To me Fayette can be rude in how they always put down everyone else and they are reaping what they have sowed.

Is that your answer to all the crime that's come into our county in the last few years?

No, we don't live in "The Magic Kingdom" but we use to have a safe and closely knit community. But ""reaping what they have sowed" is probably the most asinine statement I believe I have ever read on this forum.

I've never lived in PTC and have really only started frequenting the shops and stores in the last few years. Why? Have you gone into Wal-Mart in Fayetteville lately? Would you like to compare the crime statistics between the Avenue and the Pavilion? Or the crime states between the Wal-mart in PTC with the one in Fayetteville? Or the two Best Buy stores or the two Home Depot stores?

I feel perfectly safe shopping in the PTC area (other than K Mart).
Fulton and Clayton doesn't cause the problems... it's the criminal element that has migrated down to Fayette County that has caused them.

I can't believe you'd make such an absolutely stupid statement like that.

I"m sorry PTC is the Magic Kingdom, I think not, they have been robbed also. Yes, reaping what you have sowed- taking for granted that we are the only ones that are good, to most in Fayette county, think outside crime always come from Fulton and Clayton counties. And I have news if parents in Fayette and PTC don't wake up and pay attention to their kids instead of making them think of themselves better than everyone else and have supervison over them what do you think will happen. Crime happens in PTC, it's already in the news- oh, I'm sorry only people who don't commit crime live here. This area is the most rude place to live at times- we should treat people all the same. You could not pay me to live in PTC. I do not want my son to have their morals, that material things means that's who he is. Just go down the golf cart path and just about get run over by some kid, or drive through and they own the streets and have no regard or respect for people. Why who's to blame their parents do the same. This is life even in PTC, fayette county and everywhere. Yes, reaping what you have sowed by thinking your better and your kids or neighbors would never do such things they only come here from Fulton and Clayton. The values that parents teach their kids when they are home at all to take care of them. All I see in PTC are parents that their needs come first, and a nanny or someone else take care the kids why I play golf or tennis or go to the gym etc. I think that is sad, why even have children if you don't want to spend time with them.I thank God I have a job that I am with my child when he is at home and I know what he is doing when he is with me. Yes, I do shop at the Pavilon and it does not bother me. No matter where you go in this world you have to be on alert but don't expect the worst in some area. I guess you will have to move to PTC and let them run over you with their golf carts, and honk their horns at you in traffic. The population is growing and with that comes crime, but I know people here are not perfect!Life is life and that is why we are all equal in the eyes of God and not one is better than the other, if you think otherwise I feel sorry for you.

Could it be that you feel intimidated because of your poor writing skills and lack of education? Maybe you could get counseling.

"The Magic Kingdom" looks real BIG to people who have never been anywhere.

Wow, Sunday morning. Let's try a little Judge not lest ye be judged.

Having lived in PTC for over 12 years I can say there are far more good kids, involved in scouting, sports and church groups than the punks who get the bad press.

You are right, parents make the diffence no matter where you live.

The fact is since more high end shopping has been built, there is more crime. Many of the criminals come from outside the city.

Can you back up your claim that "This area is the most rude place to live at times". I have never been run down on the golf cart paths or honked at in traffic.

I also do not want my children to think they are better than anyone else and news flash 95% of my fellow residents don't either.

Finally, if you truely think "we are all equal in the eyes of God and not one is better than the other, if you think otherwise I feel sorry for you." Why did you write such a mean sprited article?

That was not a mean spirited article, I am letting you know what I see and I have lived here 10 years. Yes, kids do run you over with golf carts and people honk their horns at you. They have done this to myself, husband and friends. We need to teach our kids respect with that we are all equal - God made all of us that way. What are you teaching them when you are at the gym, golf course or playing tennis. You can see it but don't want to admit it. I feel sorry for you not seeing what you are living in. I just pray parents take the time for their kids,Fayette and PTC are not perfect places to live as much as you are blind to it. People are people and they live in your town also, not everyone is perfert. That is not mean spirited that is the truth.

Use to this county was so safe that you could leave your keys in the car and no one would bother it.... we never locked our homes or our cars... and I'm not talking about that far back. Even as our population rose, the crime didn't seem to rise proportionally.... not until about 5 years ago when it took off. Some associate it with the Pavilion, which I believe was a definite contributor in drawing the criminial element down from Clayton and Fulton counties. I know that I don't feel comfortable shopping at the Pavilion at all and try and park my vehicle as close to the front as possible so that it's visible. I also will not go to the Pavilion unarmed.

What a shame that a county such as ours has turned into this, and I really don't think we'll ever get it back. It's just too far gone now.

Thinking about my childhood and my child's. It's much more complicated. We live in a county that for the most part we feel our children are safe. They can ride their bikes on the paths, and wander over to friends homes. Our children can still stay out until dusk, or dinner time. Growing up, the rule in the summer was play outside so you don't drive your mom nuts, and come home when the street lights turned on, usually about 7pm.

Growing up where I did, it was safe, but not safe at the same time. Suburb near the big city and all that. Crime came into our city. Our cops were rather racists in their view. If you weren't white, you got pulled over no matter what and got the third degree. Not fair, I agree, but it was the fear of the unknown in a quiet close knit town.

Times are changing, jobs that pay well require a good education. Not everyone has the intellect or the maturity to recognize this in their youth. Also there is an section of the population that doesn't want to earn money the honest way. It is growing because of I believe MTV. The flash and noise of music celebrities.

Watching tv and reading the newspapers about the 2nd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I'm left thinking about the many people still on FEMA assistance. I understand those who have lost their homes, and don't have the money to rebuild yet because of insurance litigation, or don't have the retirement funds to pull out and rebuild, plus still live reasonably in comfort. It's the institutional element still there. The welfare lifers. The ones that can't or won't pull themselves up to be honest citizens. The ones our tax dollars are wasted on. Those are the ones coming into our communities making us feel unsafe. I say go to the extreme. Gather them up and put them in a godforsaken area. They get to leave when they get an education and prove themselves ready and willing to be a productive member of society. If they fall back on criminal or lazy ways, send them back to jail and cut off any assistance funds.

I also blame the Atlanta Housing Authority. They revitalized the heart of the city, by razing welfare complexes and sending them on their way with vouchers. I blame Clayton county landlords for lower rents and accepting vouchers or section 8 housing. I also blame the landlords of Fayette county who are guilty of not being better landlords and accepting renters of dubious character.

I believe we can change the county back to the safe community we once knew if we take the proper steps. All our ranting will not solve a thing unless we take action.

I would suspect that most would say the same about their home towns. I keep tabs on where I grew up in Southern California and it's shootings, stabbings, gang fights, and school riots. I went back last year and seen my old high school and it has a large fence all around it and guarded gates. The bad element came in and, in a short period of about 10 years, it was over. It's very sad.
