The Citizen Online completes a big move

New site features greater bandwidth, more room for growth

The Citizen’s online interactive local news site got a major technical upgrade this weekend, and our readers will be affected. The upgraded site went live Sunday (Aug. 19).

During the changeover, the former website was “frozen” for a few hours. No new content — including reader comments and blogs — was posted until the upgrade was completed.

Our thanks to our registered users — more than 10,000 strong — and our tens of thousands of unique visitors each month for interacting with our site and providing the inspiration to us for making our site even more of a "must" visit.

The new hosting setup gives us true Web 2.0 capabilities, including a three-tier server array with a separate server backup function.

Our bandwidth — the size of the Internet “pipe” — goes from small to huge: No more site crashes or slowdowns due to high viewer traffic levels.

The new array will also allow us to expand our video and audio capabilities, as well as to position us to make some major new Internet services available to our local audience and local advertising clients.

Our goal with this transition is to begin to build a “world-class” local news and information portal.

The new site will at first look just like the old site, but big changes are ahead.

So log in, post your comments and blogs, and watch for what’s coming in the next few weeks . . . .

If you're reading this, you are browsing our relocated site.

We've got some plans to improve this site, including making it more of a portal for the local community.

Help us plan -- Tell us your ideas.

What new or improved functions would you like to see?

Now's the time to speak up. We are early in the implementation stage. Let us hear from you.

Either tell us what you want via this comment or blog function, or email me at

editor@thecitizen.com

and put "website ideas" in the SUBJECT line.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Hey Cal & Gang,

Perhaps you could provide a couple of links that we can use to view some of the formats you are considering. That would give us an opportunity to test drive a couple of sites so that we can offer up our desires and opinions from the for-what-it's-worth-department. I can only imagine the time, effort and money you guys are putting into this. With that said you want to make sure you get it right the first time. Sooooo.... let's us drive a couple samples around the track for you and we'll critique.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW The Clayton Daily News Here's one option that might be worthy of consideration. Is this close to what you are considering? Puzzled

Thanks for what you provide already.

Cal,
I have found that when clicking on a link to some postings that I am taken to the original blog instead of the item I clicked. I believe this only happens when the responses or comments exceed a single page. Not positive but that seems to be the case. Is this a phenomenon of the application or something with my system? I found the same situation with your "testing" post that took me to the bank robbery blog.

You may work around that by changing the maximum number of comments to 90 instead of whatever it is now set on.

You'll find that user option under each story and beneath each page of comments.

I set mine to 90. So long as fewer than 90 comments have been posted, that change will take you right to the post sought.

However, if the posts exceed 90, you are right back with the original problem, for which we currently have no fix. But we are getting ready to upgrade, and that may be fixed in the newer version.
