Baghdad Diarist revealed as just another lying liberal

Ann Coulter's picture

In their latest demonstration of how much they love the troops, liberals have produced yet another anti-war hoax.

The New Republic has been running “true war” stories from a brave, anonymous liberal penning dispatches from Iraq. The famed “Baghdad Diarist” described his comrades joyfully using Bradley fighting vehicles to crush stray dogs, mocking a female whose face had been blown off by an IED, and defacing Iraqi corpses by wearing skull parts on their own heads.

Various conservatives began questioning the plausibility of the anonymous diarist’s account — noting, for example, that Bradley vehicles don’t “swerve,” as the diarist claimed. The editor of The New Republic responded by attacking the skeptics’ motives, complaining that some conservatives make “a living denying any bad news that emanates from Iraq.”

But when that clever retort failed to quiet rumblings from the right wing, The New Republic finally revealed the “Baghdad Diarist” to be ... John Kerry! Actually it was Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp, Democratic candidate for president circa 2028. (That gives him 20 years to learn to pronounce “Genghis.”)

In revealing himself two weeks ago, Beauchamp lashed out at “people who have never served in Iraq.” He said he was too busy fighting “an actual war” to participate in “an ideological battle that I never wanted to join.”

He had tried to stay out of ideological battles by writing made-up articles in a national magazine claiming soldiers in Iraq had become callous beasts because of George Bush’s war, killing to “secure the riches of the empire.” Alas, this proved an ineffective method of keeping his head low. Beauchamp’s next bid for privacy will be an attempt to host “The Price Is Right.”

In response to Beauchamp’s revelation that he was the “Baghdad Diarist,” the military opened an investigation into his allegations. There was no corroboration for his stories, and Beauchamp promptly signed an affidavit admitting that every single thing he wrote in The New Republic was a lie.

According to The Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb — who has led the charge of those who “make a living denying any bad news that emanates from Iraq” — Maj. Steven F. Lamb, the deputy public affairs officer for Multi-National Division-Baghdad, said this of the Baghdad diarist:

“An investigation has been completed and the allegations made by Pvt. Beauchamp were found to be false. His platoon and company were interviewed and no one could substantiate the claims.”

In response, The New Republic went into full Dan Rather loon mode. This astonishing post showed up on The New Republic Web site on Tuesday afternoon:

“A STATEMENT ON SCOTT THOMAS BEAUCHAMP:

“We’ve talked to military personnel directly involved in the events that Scott Thomas Beauchamp described, and they corroborated his account as detailed in our statement. When we called Army spokesman Maj. Steven F. Lamb and asked about an anonymously sourced allegation that Beauchamp had recanted his articles in a sworn statement, he told us, ‘I have no knowledge of that.’ He added, ‘If someone is speaking anonymously (to The Weekly Standard), they are on their own.’ When we pressed Lamb for details on the Army investigation, he told us, ‘We don’t go into the details of how we conduct our investigations.’ — The Editors”

It’s good to see Mary Mapes is working again.

What on earth is going on? Either the military investigation found that Beauchamp lied or it didn’t. Either military personnel corroborated stories of soldiers wearing skulls as crowns or they didn’t. Either Army spokesman Maj. Steven Lamb gave a statement to The Weekly Standard or he didn’t.

At the same time as The New Republic was posting the above statement, which completely contradicted The Weekly Standard’s update, renowned right-wing news outlet ABC News confirmed that the military has concluded that Beauchamp was writing “fiction.” ABC also quoted Goldfarb’s account and said that Maj. Lamb reiterated his statement that Beauchamp’s stories were false to ABC. The New York Times had the same story on Wednesday.

The New Republic has gone mad. Perhaps the magazine brought its former employee, fantasist Steven Glass, out of retirement. It’s long past time for The New Republic to file for intellectual Chapter 7. Arthur Andersen was implicated in fewer frauds.

And we wonder how Democratic congressmen can lie about a vote they lost on the floor of the House — captured on CSPAN for all the world to see — changing the vote so that they win.

America’s imminent victory in Iraq and safety from terrorist attacks at home is driving them all crazy.

The Baghdad diarist is "just another lying liberal" like Senator David Vitters is just another prostitute-hiring, immoral Republican. You see, if you take the behavior of one member of a party or way of thinking (liberal) and try to paint the entire group by their behavior (lying liberal) one must draw the conclusion that the Haggards, Delays, Giulianis, and Vitters of the GOP are just representing common GOP traits.

But even more incredible than Ann's desparate lashing out at liberals is her last sentence:

"America’s imminent victory in Iraq and safety from terrorist attacks at home is driving them all crazy."

Because our victory in Iraq and "safety from terrorists" is "imminent," would any of Ann's GOP supporters take on three questions which should be fairly easy seeing as the "victory" is imminent?

1: Give or take a month, when will this imminent victory be? Heck, give or take 3 months.

2: Will the Sunni politicians boycotting parliament be a part of this victory?

3: Last but not at all least, will this victory be shared by Iran which, as a Shiia nation, is a natural ally for shiia Muslim Shiites in Iraq?

Ann, a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

So you think that an active duty soldier, lying about atrocities impacts the world the same as a hypocritical politician? One spread lies that our enemies (MSM and politicians against the military, oh and the terrorists themselves) will use and the other pulled a Clinton. Both are bad, but which one smears our military?

By the way, how come Jack Murtha didn't hold a press conference to apologize to the two Marines that just had ALL CHARGES droppped against them for the haditha incident? Where was the MSM coverage of that?

Ann is right to point out the garbage spewn and lies told that will smear soldiers. Why does that upset you, because the little creep is on your side?

You should have skipped this one my friend. He tried to pull a Kerry and got caught. maybe he will run for Senate someday, without all the fruit salad and the Band of Brothers.

My blog is on the concept of leeping logic, and not this particular blogger.

I'm a democrat. Compared to you, I'm liberal. Ann attempted to smear me, a democrat, by lumping this Baghdad blogger's actions into the category of all liberals. I take offense to that lazy attack on all democrats.

As to "which is worse?" You tell me. Senator Vitters told President Clinton he should resign . He said, on the floor of the Senate, that Bill Clinton was morally unfit to govern. He said these things while paying prostitutes for sex.
He incited God and scripture to promote the Defense of Marraige Act. That, in my humble opinion, is damningly , eternally bad, bad, bad.

As for the blogger, I don't believe this is open and shut, is it? One side says things happenned, the other to the contrary.

And I'm not sure where Murtha fits into this, but I was aware of two individuals being cleared because, "although they acted wrongly, their behavior did not warrant criminal charges." That is two of the 8. If you think Haditha is an example of fine military bearing and behavior, you and I will forever be in diasagreement.

But let me emphasize, this post of mine is about a broad-brush coulter attack that is, in my opinion, desparate.

and Army, the three questions are still awaiting answers.

He's on your side, not ours. So are Murtha and almost all of the media.

As far as logic, I think Ann doesn't need any pointers. Laughing out loud

Remember, she uses satire and hyperbole (i.e., exaggeration to make a point).

Vitter is a hypocrite, but he represents LA, what do you expect. Puzzled

DOMA is to prevent activist courts from forcing the homo agenda on everyone. Politicians should support what their constituents support (which is DOMA).

"Rep. Murtha’s office hangs up when asked about the Haditha Marines"

When he wasn’t busy over the past year or so arguing that we ought to fight al Qaeda in Iraq from our bases in Okinawa and Diego Garcia, Rep. Jack “Abscam” Murtha has been busy stuffing his face with pork, behaving questionably over appropriations and smearing US Marines. Now that three of the Marines Murtha prejudged to be guilty of cold-blooded murder have been cleared of all charges, Murtha ought to answer for what he has been saying about them. [See links.]

Today, I called up his office in DC to see if he was planning on issuing any statements. For some reason, his staff is less than forthcoming on that point. Puzzled

1: How are things going in Alaska with Murkowski and Kohring? What ever happenned with the Giuliani campaign manager in Florida who offered men money for oral favors? And, by the way, will someone please answer my big three questions above? PLEASE????

Ohhh, and by the way...... Here is what the people whose hearts and minds we are trying to WIN think:

from Arab News outlet Zaman:

"Baghdad Rejects Report Exonerating US Soldiers
The US army, which carries on four separate investigations into civilian deaths in Iraq, being mainly the Haditha massacre, acquitted US soldiers of the killing of 11 civilians, nine of them women, in the town of Ishaqi.

The US administration defends that an air attack was conducted on the house with civilians inside “upon the demand of soldiers who came under fire.” Nevertheless, Iraqi witnesses and police claim that the bombardment occurred in order to “erase the traces of a civilian massacre.”

In the frame of the investigation launched, the US army concluded that US soldiers “did no wrong” during the raid; however, the Iraqi government claimed that the investigation results were unfair and asked Iraqi officials to launch a separate investigation."

How do these operations help us "win" anything, Denise? I think this is and has been a giant step backwards.

Getting your news from "Arab News outlet Zaman"? Puzzled

FOX may lean a little right, but I'd guess that Zaman is 100% pro-terrorist. Anything like Al Jazeera?

Other soldiers have been acquitted of "atrocities," and I'm glad that the evidence exonerated these Marines. Some are bad apples, but the vast majority are honorable. Agree or not?

"Charges Against Cpl. Sharrat Dropped in Haditha Case"

The decision to drop the charges followed an earlier recommendation from a hearing officer who listened to evidence in the case. Under military law, a commanding general has total jurisdiction over a case.

In his recommendation, Lt. Col. Paul Ware said murder charges brought against Sharratt were based on unreliable witness accounts, poor forensic evidence and questionable legal theories.

"The government version is unsupported by independent evidence," Ware wrote in an 18-page report. "To believe the government version of facts is to disregard clear and convincing evidence to the contrary."

A win for "the little people"!

As far as "winning" in Iraq or anywhere in the Middle East, I'd say we're "winning" if we investigate who's here and stop letting just about anybody walk in. That's why Congress & Pres. Bush lost on the amnesty bill. We'll never eradicate all of the Muslim terrorists over there, but we need to be A LOT more discerning here.

As far as being "in tune to corrupt politics," politics = corruption 99.5+% of the time. Sad

We're talking about the same partisan type of investigation that has completely botched the investigation into Pat Tillman's death. How credible is this brass?

And, Denise, if we want victory in Iraq, we will need to concern ourselves with what Iraqis actually think and feel.

no takers on the big three ?????

The brass never err, unless congress is involved.
Enlisted and low ranking officers occasionally are found to err!
I know, I used to prepare (not originate) such reports for investigative committees.

The Baghdad diarist is "just another lying liberal" like Senator David Vitters is just another prostitute-hiring, immoral Republican

Hack I won't argue with you on this. I'll even give you a bit more ammo. Go to the Fox News web site and check out that supposedly Conservative bastion of beasts. There is very little "actual" news to view but there are tons of links to racy websites and articles dealing with the sleazy lives of every pop tart celebrity out there. Most of the articles and videos revolve around who is doing who, who wears the sluttiest clothes, who supposedly got raped at the Playboy mansion and on and on an on.

You know what? I'm a Conservative.... and I can darn well tell you that Witter ain't no Conservative. The only one on your list that qualified as a Conservative was Delay. Boy did he get the shaft from some dirty politics.

I guess my point is that I'm sick of Republicans getting the honor of wearing the Conservative title.

As far as Ann goes.... Well.. start holding Bill Maher and Al Franken to the same standards that you hold Ann to and I'll be willing to toss the whole bunch out with you. For credibilities sake start holding your own to the same standards you're holding the Republican clowns to. You're too bright and thoughtful to be sounding so much like Dollar (ouch), Bladder, and OnlyRealRat. Smiling

BTW.... where have you been man? Hope life is dishing out the some of it's best to you and yours. Smiling

Let's hold each one of them accountable. Or are you capable of holding one your own to the same standards as you hold the ones on the Right. How about it hypocrite? Eye-wink

I've really been enjoying myself until very recently. I've definitely been living life to the fullest, but now the bills are due. I wanted to get together with Gump and Hutch this weekend, but I drank the water and ate some street vendor food in Santiago, Chile, and I've been on the commode ever since:( .
I don't mind sounding like dollar when dollar makes cents Smiling
Bill Maher and Al Franken are comedians. They are in it for the money. If we can admit Rush and Ann are in it for the bucks and not the ideology as well, we're in business.
I find that, taken in moderation, these boards are much more tolerable than street empenadas in Chile.

Take care

Some other weekend I hope, I hope you aren't holding your breath till $ makes cents, can you actually turn blue? If they're in the media they're in it for the money and personally I thought Mahr was funny till he said the terrorists who flew the planes were braver then our sailors who were firing our tomahawk missiles, I wouldn't pee on him since then. Hey.. I learned along time ago that you don't eat tamales that originate from street vendor carts in New Orleans. Sticking out tongue

Yup..Rush and Anne are in it for the money, just as Bill and Al. I'd also say that all truly believe in their politcal agendas. That I won't take from any of them.

Honestly I wish someone would pay me for the time I spend on here. Eye-wink Guess since I'm not it proves I do it for the love of this sport.
