Does anybody care about Barry Bonds?

Kevin Wandra's picture

The San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds is on the verge of setting Major League Baseball's all-time home run record. The only reason I care about Bonds is because I own his rookie card. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about the juiced-up slugger. Do you care that Bonds is about to break hometown legend Hank Aaron's home run record?

Couldn't help but notice the showboating Bonds did after his follow through on #756.

He STOOD at the plate, raising his arms in the victory pose (mimicking the other SF fans in the background) and ... WAIT for it, WAIT for it.... Several seconds later and he begins the home run trot.

Any other circumstance and one would call this showing up the pitcher.

The next Nats pitcher to face Barry should drill him, if you ask me. What's the line from Bull Durham? "RUN DUMMY!"

Or does Bonds get a free pass for finally getting the monkey off his back?

I say hurray for Hank Aaron not showing up. His lack of presence speaks volumes, video or no video.

If I used heavy steroids everyday I could break his record and so could you. Heck every grandmother in the world could break that record with the right drugs. Better living through chemistry.

Unfortunately, Bonds and those like him, would simply "burst" if they couldn't "showboat,"
They need admiration so badly that they will do what it takes to get it!

If even half of the rumors are true he is a druggy loser.

A-Rod will break his record or someone will. Nnoe of them had to do it w/ the ball Ruth had to hit. Do it under those game / travel conditions.

BUT a Lefty getting 300 wins (or a RH), we've seen the last. Congats to Glavine.

You still have to admit he had to put the wood on the ball.

If you question the ability I challenge you to go to the batting cages and go into the fastball area. Now that machine has control, just think about facing a young Glavine. Especially after he hits you in 1st starts.

Part of the problem w/ all this is that the league didn't address it. You are Bonds or Sosa or McGuire and your watching juiced up guys get a "leg" up on you. Whatcha gonna do?

People debated whether Maris should have * over Ruth year record.

How about the pitchers? We have cutters & greasers and spitters. In some ways it's part of the game. They are all still records of some merit.

Barry Bonds hit No. 756 to the deepest part of the ballpark Tuesday night, and hammered home the point: Like him or not, legitimate or not, he is baseball's new home run king.

Saw this and thought it summed up Barry's achievement pretty good.

I agree with what he said. We can talk about several years of him being "juiced up" all we want but it doesn't take away the tremendous baseball skills that Barry displayed over the years. He's a heck of player and it's regretful that he will always have his "self-imposed shadow" hanging over his head.

But anyways....Congrats Barry.

A side note to Henry Aaron... Thanks for being the "pure" baseball champ that you were and still are in spite of the challenges you faced. You're still a leader over Barry in so many ways. Smiling

Calling Bonds a leader really throws me for a loop. I suppose Vick is also?
Leaders are supposed to be someone to emulate.
The very word leader doesn't mean money, sports, or fame. It means the person who is foremost in guiding others.
If you want to call him famous, Ok.

Git didn't call Bonds a leader, he called Aaron a leader, you sure are having a hard time today, maybe time to get the glasses checked.

Now how am I supposed to know that comparing one leader (Aaron) to another (Bonds) doesn't mean that they are both leaders?
Why do you say I am not clear?

Nowhere in his post did he call Bonds a leader, nor did he compare one leader to another anywhere in the post. I don't know where you've got your head, but it must be dark in there.

"you are still a leader over Barrys (leadership." (quote)
Hank is a "better" leader than Barry is what it says!
This can be cleared up if he or she states that Barry IS NOT a leader!

Right on Bladder. Great points. I agree that there are major differences between Babe's and Hammerin Hanks accomplishments. With that said I attempt to take nothing from Hanks achievements.

We'll always idolize Babe and Hank as great baseball icons. As for Barry???.... well, I doubt he'll be included in many movies and kids shows portrayed as an all time great.

Yes, we care a great deal about Barry Bonds. Those of us who played a little baseball, and had as idols DiMaggio, Musial, Garagiola, Williams, Feller, Sain, Spahn, Mantle, Aaron, and a few of the currents, very much care about Barry Bonds.
We worry considerably that he cheated!
That he may have voided all of the hard work hundreds of ball players accomplished trying for records, being totally honest at it!
He could have cleared it up long ago by admitting just what he took and getting a ruling on it, he didn't.

I am in complete agreement with you. Barely Bonds spits in the face of all the hard working, not so physically gifted(or chemically enhanced) hard-working ball-players that have gone before. (Don't forget Pete)

Why don't you ask the people in San Francisco?
This is Hank Aaron country.
