Peachtree City Councilman Stuart Kourajian has announced he will not seek re-election to his council seat in November.

Instead, Kourajian will seek election to the Post 3 seat on the Fayette County Commission, currently held by Peter Pfeifer. That election will occur next year.

In a news release Tuesday morning, Kourajian thanked city residents for giving him the chance to serve them.

"I have been steadfast in my resolve to control growth and to minimize traffic issues," Kourajian said. "These are issues that impact not just Peachtree City but all of Fayette County."

The departure of Kourajian comes on the heels of the surprise resignation two weeks ago from Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford, who announced she was leaving the city to live in Holland with her husband, who was transferred there for his job.

Qualifying for the seats held by Kourajian and Rutherford runs from Aug. 27-31, and potential candidates must pay a $180 qualifying fee.

A halfhearted run for higher office is a graceful way for an incumbent to quit. He still loses, but it is better than getting kicked out of his current seat. And the end result is the same - he gets to stay home instead of going to those horrible meetings. A good solution when the enthusiasm for politics wanes.

Back to my old picture, so I can say "I don't have a dog in this fight" with real feelings.

Did he really say he controlled growth?

Seriously, what did Stuart Kourajian do? Double his pay maybe? I think the reason he's not running for re-election is he wouldn't be voted back in.

All that race does is guarantee that county commission will be run by Eric and Jack - yes, in that order.

But, PTC now has 2 seats not held by incumbents coming up this fall. Please remember that is how Steve Brown snuck in as mayor. Lenox was unable to run because of term limits and no one who was knowledgable or experienced stepped up and ran. Same thing coming up this fall in PTC. 2 seats, no incumbents. What are you goin to do, bloggers?

Anyone who has lived in PTC for 6 months that has $180 can run.

The first time you opened your mouth anybody on this site would know it was you. You need another spelling lesson from that third grader you're starting to backslide.

If the pay raise goes through many greedy people will run. Actually it might be a good idea for me.

How many council meetings do I have to attend? Do I have to really care about the city? How many meetings do I have to attend at the smokey dive Y-nots? Do I have to drink to alcohol poisoning levels or is just one or two good enough?

Stuart,

While I have not always agreed with your stance, I do appreciate what you have done for Peachtree City and I wish you well in your run against Peter Pfeifer assuming he is crazy enough to run again.

One side note, at the County level; as I'm sure you know, they do hold mid-day meetings and I've noticed you struggling to make the start of many a city council meeting, so I hope you can attend them Smiling

Good luck and thanks again!
