What do you think of the Braves trade for Mark Teixeira?

Kevin Wandra's picture

The Atlanta Braves made a significant trade yesterday, sending catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, shortstop Elvis Andrus, pitcher Neftali Feliz and a player to be named later to the Texas Rangers for first baseman Mark Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay.

The trade upgrades the Braves' hitting, defense and relief pitching, and it increases their chances of contending for the World Series title. Do you like the trade, or do you feel the Braves gave up too much young (but unproven) talent in the deal?

Tex is a stud. I wonder if he's going to be a rental for the remainder of the year or does this mean that Andruw is gone after this season? No way the Braves can afford both.

There is no doubt the Braves were in desperate need for bullpen help and getting a lefty to fill a void helps(and the deal right afterwards with KC), but they probably gave up a little much with Salty, 1 very good prospect, and 2 somewhat promising arms. Despite great depth in the organization at catcher and SS, I think they might have used those assets a bit differently. I actually thought pitching all-around was a bigger need than a stud hitter, but it sure will be nice to have Tex in the lineup.

I think Texy...tech...tush... THAT NEW GUY will fit well into the team. Have you noticed the Braves seem to always have two catchers worthy of starting but no third of any matter?

Not many teams have a decent back up catcher. But I believe the Braves will call up Pena, he's the Catcher at Richmond, he's batting over .300 there and can play other positions too.

Who is now even the 2nd catcher, much less third? Ehatwould have been wrong with keeping Salty as McCann's replacement for 2-3 years?
They will turn Tex loose next year aaas he will be a free agent after that and Braves won't pay any more 15 million per year! And Salty will be gone!

Pena is ok, but I kinda thought Salty might be the "number, one, guy(Jack Palance in Batman)" soon. Tex might be ok if can lose that bad habit of hittin' dingers and drivin' in runs. It just seems to me with the lack of depth a catcher which most teams have, the bravos keep getting rid of catchers when I think they should hang-on to 'em.

Salty was a great catcher but no club can afford to keep McCann and Salty. They were smart in dealing him although he will be missed. He was wonderful. Here the Bravos get a power bat, good glove and a middle reliever that might make a difference in a few games in September. Yes, they gave up some prospects (like when they dealt Marte) but the Braves have shown a willingness to compete and I am excited by it. The Mets are clearly one of the very teams in baseball and the Braves are pulling out all the stops to win and it is great. What a great race this is going to be. And, its not like the Braves have gutted their farm system with this trade and others (like the Yankees have). Oh, speaking of your Yankees, Kev....There is one way that the Yankees can still go to the playoffs--- buy tickets.
