The Peachtree City Council voted tonight to allow voters to decide in November whether or not to build an expansion of the city’s Gathering Place and build two astroturf multi-purpose sports fields.

The vote was not unanimous, however, as councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford cast the sole vote against the measure, which passed 4-1.

Council elected to finance the projects over a 10-year period instead of the initially proposed 15 years, which will result in a savings of just over $1 million if both projects are approved in the city’s November general election.

City leisure services director Randy Gaddo pointed out that the 11,000 square foot expansion would allow the Gathering Place to be used more often for indoor programming not just for senior citizens but for other groups, making it more like a regular community center.

The astroturf sports fields will be used to host the city’s soccer program and its football program, which will be relocated from Riley Field.

I was told the astroturf fields will cost $950,000 per field. Is there any truth to this figure? If it is true, that's crazy!

Vote Republican
