Am I being unreasonable?

slider's picture

I rented a cotton candy machine from Able 2 Rent All for a party last weekend. When I turned it on , it popped a circuit breaker. After 3 tries in 3 differnt locations, I gave up and informed the kids no cotton candy.
When I brought it back and told them what happened , they plugged it in and it popped a breaker at the shop. They moved it to another plug, and it worked fine.
The owner refused to refund my money ($50)because he was able to make it work for him. I was flabbergasted! I could not believe that he was not worried in the least that his equipment had let me(and a bunch of kids) down.
So , am I being unresonable here, or is this guy as big a jerk as I think he is?

Where are you people w/ your "percieved" problems?

I guess the answer to slidder's question was, "Yes, you are being unreasonable."

BUT you did the damage as did the mobile vet lady.

I could bring up some other issues but let me just say,

SOME of YOU are COWARDS.

Please read your comment again, slowly, and see if it makes any sense to you.

I only bring this old chestnut because I have a problem.

Someone writes a blog. Thrashes a business or in a recent case a young person who's parents are public figures (I know no one involved & both mine are outta here), or a mobile vet. They git to say what they want. Everyone chimes in / or not. BUT it is out there.

This is a good example. Slider where are U?

I sent the rental company an e:mail. John got back to me w/:
I appreciate your e-mail informing me of the blogs, its a free country and
people can say whatever they believe. In this case slider left out a lot of
information that might change how you feel. Slider picked up the cotton
candy machine on Friday afternoon and was to return it Monday by 9 AM. We
check these macines before they go out and no word was heard from Slider
until they returned it Monday afternoon. We were open all day Saturday and
I have an after hours emergency number on the answering machine that they
could have called on Sunday. We gave slider a full refund on all the unused
merchandise that they wanted to return and offered them a store credit for
the full $50 they had paid in rent to be used at any time for anything else
they might want to rent. I explained to Slider that we only give refunds if
we can find a mechanical problem with any equipment that is rented and that
it would not be fair to all the other customers to treat them differently.

And another good reason to take things here with a grain of salt. There are always two sides to the story. Sometimes, 3.

Submitted by bettyb on Thu, 07/26/2007 - 11:31am.

I read Slider's blog over and over, not once was a store credit mentioned. She stated she returned the supplies unopened, she left out the fact that she was given a refund on the supplies. She also left out the fact that she kept it until Monday afternoon. If I rented something that ruined my child's party, I would call the store the minute they opened. Small company's are hard to come by now days, for her to write only half of the story on here is disgraceful. After hearing both sides, I will gladly rent there.

GIT SAID: Slider. That wasn't right. I rent from them once or twice a year myself. Until you come back on here stating that this issue has been resolved then I will not do business with them again. If it does get resolved make sure you let us know so we can end our boycott of Able-2-Rents.

Good work Bladder.... But, I'll have you know that this Crow eating tastes like {{{{EDITED AND BANNED IF I SAID IT}}}}. If you think the feathers are bad then wait until you try to swallow those claws. Sticking out tongue

Slider, Buddy, fess up if this is true. Go kiss and make up with these guys. Sounds like a huge misunderstanding. Bladder's story sounds reasonable. I don't want to boycott a store erroneously. I'm running out places to shop as it is. Smiling

That company has been in business for over 20 years , they must be doing something right. When you deal with the public it is impossible to make everyone happy. I would like to know how long the cotton candy machine was out for? Did they call to report a problem? I have rented equipment in the past, you are charged for time out.

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Wed, 07/18/2007 - 4:48pm.

If you keep it a day, you pay!
If you took it back that day so he could possibly rent it again, then he shoulld have refunded.
It may reqire a full circuit for itself.

Apparently - much was left out.

I am not a big fan of 'store credit' but if he refunded the money for the unused merchandise and couldn't find anything wrong with the machine and you didn't call Saturday ... and he gave you a store credit I would say that is fair.

No boycotting here buddy.

If you did, no problem. Just inform your credit card comp. that the machine was defective and you're NOT paying for it.

If you paid by cheque, you can stop payment on it. That will cost you around $25 courtesy of your bank.

If you paid cash, then you can skip this years proctology exam as you just got yours from the rental company.

Heck no, I paid with a check, and it had already cleared the bank , so no recourse. The store was not open for me to take it back so I had no chance to get another one.Just out of luck. I still can not believe this guy cares less about his customers or his reputation. He got my $50 , but will never get my bussiness again. I have in the past rented high ticket items. trenchers and such. I mentioned this to him and he did not seem to care.

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Thu, 07/19/2007 - 6:25am.

Doesn't sound like the whole story.
He may have thought you were one of those people who try to get something for nothing. Believe me they exist and I'll bet he has been taken numerous times.
If he is such a dummy, then he won't make it long!

I am hoping that I can show people that this is an unscrupulous bussiness man , and that they will not patronize his shop. I have no way of making him give me my money back , but it will not be too hard to let EVERYONE I can know that he is a crook. It should not take long to cost him $50+.

This guy did not for a second think I was trying to get something for nothing because I returned the cotton candy mix unopened as well as all the paper handles that were provided. He is just greedy, and does not care about his customers.
Anyone else that is willing to stay away from Able 2 Rent All after hearing this, please speak up. I would love to be able to show this uh gentleman that his actions are costing him $$$.

Submitted by bettyb on Wed, 07/25/2007 - 2:55pm.

The mix was unopened, that's strange you need to put the sugar in the cotton candy machine before you turn it on. The plot thickens!!!!Anyone who has used a cotton candy machine knows you don't turn it on empty.

Power to the people.

Treat us right or we will go somewhere else.

Able2rent all, you need to take care of the man (or M&B Rentals), or another company will get our business.

Make the man happy. You could have made a customer for life - instead you are hurting yourself. The greedy become the needy my friend.

In response to the e-mail.I cannot win in small claims court because the back of the rental agreement basically says that the equipment doesnt have to work. The crooked merchant has covered himself on every angle.

How would he have fixed it????
It was a day after the party that he refused to refund my money.
( He's not open the day of the party as if that would help) Sure , I'm going to leave my party to go see if this fine fella is going to fix a machine. This is logical. This is the same logic Mr Able 2 Rent All was using.
