So I was reading the local paper and came across this heart-wrenching story. Based on the article, these two men are young and apparently made some really bad decisions. Although one of them ended up in the hospital, both are very fortunate that no one else was injured or killed. They should count their lucky stars.

So I've read through the article and other readers' comments on the story, and I decided I'd add my two cents. First off, I looked up the intersection of Walt Banks Road and Southern Trace to get a feel for the accident site. I expected the curve to be very sharp, but it doesn't appear to be (at least from the air). I've seen vehicles go through curves as tight as or tighter than that on the interstate at speeds well above 75 mph without losing control. It's Atlanta, people speed like crazy in this city. Compare the two maps between the accident site and this curve on I-85. The maps I linked to are at the same scale, and the curvature is not all that different. It seems to me that some sort of event or catalyst caused the Scion vehicle to lose control, but I'll leave that up to the experts to figure out. It could've been impairment from the alcohol that caused a miscalculation by the driver during the turn, something having to do with the road conditions, or something else. I'm sure the investigators will figure all of that out.

Depending on the final location of the Scion relative to the road, I would think any passersby would see the accident and try to help. Certainly the people in the houses near the neighborhood entrance would have heard a whole lot of noise (and maybe responded?), especially if the Scion struck "several" signs and walls and then overturned as the article says. I'm also not sure what those cars "possess under the hood," but to hit 75 mph in the distance I see on the Google Map, it must be impressive. Any idea what each car "possesses under the hood?" You said in another post that you work in the automotive industry. I'm not entirely sure what you do in the automotive industry, but it sounds to me like you may be a mechanic if you're working on all aspects of cars as you implied in that other post.

For instance, in your 07/12/2007 comment at 2:11pm, you say that if the two persons in the news article were racing, Mr. Lefeurve would be ahead, but the article says otherwise. You also make mention of beer cans coming out of the trunk. Where did this info come from? Even more interesting is you divulge some data that's not in the article: "Cameron stopped, helped pull his friend out of the car and help him calm until the ambulance came." Exactly how do you know that? There are only a few ways I can think of that you would know that kind of information: (1) You were at the scene and saw it happen (maybe this is a moot point since you say you were at home in another post?), (2) You know someone who was at the scene, or (3) you know someone in the PTC Police Department who gave you that information. If you were at the scene, you're a key witness and probably shouldn't be talking - if so, did you help? If you know someone who was at the scene, did you know some of the neighbors (if they came to help) or some good samaritans (if some were present) that told you these things, or do you know one (or both) of the two men involved? It sounds like you have knowledge of each man's vehicle. In your 3:35pm post, you say you are defending the truth. First of all, I've learned not to trust anyone on the internet. But I am curious as to how you know the truth as you see it. The article doesn't shed light on the details, but you seem to have them. That just strikes me as interesting.

Street racing involving alcohol (alledged) within the confines of one of the most patroled cities in Georgia by individuals that consider themselves adults to me is mind boggling. Sure, I share the compassion of others in knowing someone is hurt either physically or at least financially, but all of us have to take the responsibility of our actions.
In years past, the authorities would likely impose time on a work gang for instances such as this. A hard lesson sure, but one not easily forgotten. Times have certainly changed. The lesson to be learned now for such stupidity is much less severe and likely will take other iterations.
Life simply is not fair--we share a world with those with whom we know waste the very oxygen we require.
