Victim followed seconds before incident

A Jonesboro teen was arrested Tuesday morning after he snuck up behind an elderly woman in her driveway and grabbed her purse, police said.

The 69-year-old victim reported that she noticed the vehicle following her for a short distance just before she pulled into her driveway on Ga. Highway 92, said Sheriff’s Lt. Belinda McCastle.

The woman saw the teen escape in a red SUV, and about 10 minutes later the suspect was in custody, pulled over by a detective in the parking lot of the Applebee’s restaurant in Fayetteville, McCastle said.

Inside the red Dodge Durango was the suspect and his quarry: the victim’s purse, located in the front seat, McCastle said.

The suspect was identified as Maurice Dontae Barnes, 18. He is charged with robbery by sudden snatching.

McCastle urges residents to use caution when traveling, as any strange activity should be reported to 911.

Note to the Fayettenam cops.......start to think like Dekalb county......shoot to kill......I'm sick of you knuckleheads playing the southern gentleman act. When they give you half of a reason...get on with it....cut the cancer.

that the perp was armed. Had one of Fayette's Finest shot him, he (the deputy) would have surely been facing murder charges. Sounds to me like the deputies handled it exactly as they were supposed to. Great work guys!!!

Congratulations to Fayette County law enforcement. Once guns are used, the possibility of losing an officer increases. Keep up the good work Fayette County!!

I was traveling on 314 right as 6 cop cars pulled in to set up a perimeter to catch this guy. He never stood a chance. They had a 1/2 mile of cops ready for anything. Don't mess with Fayetteville! Note: if you are being followed don't go home! Go to a fire station or police station.

How terrible. To be robbed right in your own driveway. An 18 year-old targeting a helpless 69 year-old woman. Such cowardice.

I'm afraid that is what many addicted, hungry, can't hold a job people do. May not have to sleep in a crack house that night, or under a bridge. Their logic has been honed since birth.

Good copy Dollar, but it's unlikely an 18-year-old Clayton County punk would waste time cruising Fayetteville for a victim to rob just to pay for crack back home in Riverdale. More likely he craved the riblet platter, since as soon as he robbed that lady he cruised on over to Applebee's.

As long as Clayton keeps turning out criminals THIS stupid, we've nothing to fear.
