By: Letters to the ...
As I recall, this could be the very first letter I have ever written to my local newspaper; however, something I saw the other day just didn’t sit very well with me. Let me begin by stating the obvious: We live in a world of turmoil and violence. We and our children (and my grandchildren) are bombarded daily with scenes of all the inhumane things we as people do to each other, from the streets of our cities, to Iraq, and even in our local neighborhoods. Now it seems we have invited violence right into our own backyard. I just saw a poster for Southside Slugfest II. It goes without saying what this is all about: It’s “Live: No Holds Barred Fighting.” And, by the way, the poster advertises “All Ages Welcome.” Knock, knock, is anyone home at the amphitheater scheduling office? Since when do we as Peachtree City citizens condone this sort of so-called entertainment? In what context is “No Holds Barred Fighting” appropriate for our community or, for that matter, any community which prides itself on being a great place to raise a family? You may think I’m being too critical, but I don’t imagine I’m the only person in Peachtree City having the same concerns. This is not just some “Sporting” or “Summer Theater” event. This is several young men publicly beating the crap out of each other. In the future, let’s use a little more discretion and social insight when scheduling events at OUR amphitheater.
