Fund stormwater needs with road money

It’s amazing how many people have come out of nowhere to tell us why we need this [stormwater] utility. Amazingly enough, they do not reside in Peachtree City.

With all the cutbacks and layoffs, many families have had to tighten their belts and make do with what they have been provided. The proponents of this proposed utility appear to have a vested interest in this passing.

It is time for Peachtree City to tighten their belts and stop this tax-and-spend mentality. They have other options for funding this utility, however, this falls on deaf ears because they can’t complete everything they want to accomplish within a short timeframe.

Visit www.georgiastormwater.com for this information. Download Volume 1 of the manual and through the search bar, type in fees and see how many ways there are to fund this utility without the proposed monthly fee to the homeowners.

This utility can and should be funded from the general fund. The money can be transfered into the stormwater account where it cannot be used for other purposes.

If this does not yield enough capital, SPLOST funds can be redirected to assist with this purpose.

The city does not want people to know this because they want to use that money for roads. Drainage from the roads falls into this category.

SPLOST was sold to us as a method of obtaining money for roadway improvements where Peachtree City gets the money and can spend it on projects of their choice.

Public Works is responsible for the maintenance of this infrastructure. What have they been doing over the years this deterioration was taking place? Have we forgotten the theft that took place in the Public Works Department?

Winter is when these projects need to be rectified and they choose to hide at the soccer fields, parks or on Stallings Road to avoid working in the cold weather. All options need to be researched before making a decision and this department needs to be reviewed before more money is placed in their hands.

Well, I most assuredly have lived here for 19 years and the around 80 homes within walking distance threatened by stormwater flooding most assuredly are in PTC.

Plus, it isn't an option. A stormwater system is required by law and infrastructure needs. It has to be in place by around mid 2008.

Remember that road collapse on Peachtree Parkway?

And no, even if tagged in the General Fund it can be redirected. That is one big reason for the Utility. It cannot be used for any other purpose.

And no, the Stormwater issues does not fall under roads. It is stormwater, which cover a ton more than roads.

And no, Public Works is not what is mandated for Stormwater. The mandate requires specialized people who only work on stormwater.

And the theft and so on is a good reason for the Utility. Like sewage and water utilities that is all the do. Makes it hard to hide shenanigans.

Yes, there are other ways to finance. But no, the Utility has proven to be the best.

You really didn't dig deep enough to get all the information available on this issue.

PTC Guy -
(first, remember, I'm with you on keeping the stormwatere project moving) You've mentioned a collapse on the parkway a couple of times, and I'm not familiar with that. I know they did some work on Dividend and Hip Pocket, and there was some damage with the flooding in 1994 (but since that was a huge event, I'm not sure even a grade A stormwater system could have handled it). Where on the parkway and when did the collapse happen?
Thanks!

I was trying to remember where the picture was. It as part of the presentation.

What happened was a pipe under the road collapsed from age. It went, the dirt above collapsed in and then the road. Water washout made it worse.

This wasn't flooding or like that related. Just plain old age and giving out.

One of the rewards of old systems if not kept up with.

If I remember the exact place to show more data I will add it.

The City has that presentation on their web site. I checked and it was the parkway - I just usually notice projects like that going on around town. Must have been gone that month (I confess - I was not at the public meeting on the stormwater).
Thanks
