Fayette's educators were probably smiling late Friday as the Department of Education rolled out the latest test scores for the 2007 Criterion-Referenced Competency Test.
More than 1,400 first graders took the reading and English language arts test this year and led their peers across the state in large systems. More than 95 percent of the students met or exceeded standards in reading, while 92 percent met or surpassed the standards in English language arts.

The accolades in this discussion are well deserved. The teachers in Fayette County are among the nations finest. However, caution must be observed. CRCT scores represent how students faired compared to the Georgia standards for education. We are at the top!! But when compared with the national test scores - we are at or near the bottom. What are the results of our (Fayette County) students when compared on the national achievement scale?

What a great start for the young students of Fayette County. Congratulations to the elementary school teachers, and to the parents for providing the motivational learning experience, and discipline required for achievement!!

Yes, Good job to everyone. People in this county do work hard to supply a good education to our young, one of the main reasons I decided to live here. However, keep in mind the advantages that our children have. Due to a higher income level in Fayette, most children here grow up with more access to better computers, better books, helping hands like Sylvan, etc. Many of those children in poorer areas work just as hard, but do not have the same educational access. So, in our moment of achievement, please do not forget to pass a little of the charity off to those who need it. Donate some books, send some cash, whatever you have to give - not just to the poorer schools, but to the families in those areas that aren't able to have those materials at home. Again, congrats to our students; Their success is not entirely due to advantage, they also work very hard.
