The Georgia division of the Federal Highway Administration has recommended approval of the a Poplar Road interchange on Interstate 85 in Coweta County to the United States Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. The Washington office must give final approval of this interchange because it is within the Atlanta Transportation Management Area. It is unclear how long it will take to receive a final decision from the Washington office.

The Poplar Road Interchange is included in the Atlanta Regional Commission’s current Mobility 2030 Regional Transportation Plan. The interchange is currently scheduled to be constructed by 2020 and estimated construction costs for the Poplar Road interchange are $20.5 Million. Funding for the potential interchange would come from a blend of local, state and federal transportation dollars.

“We have been working on getting the Poplar Road Interchange to the next level and having State approval is a great first step in the process,” says Tavores Edwards, Coweta County’s Transportation Planner. “As this process continues, Coweta County will work in every way possible to see this important transportation project become a reality.”

This is great news for people in East Coweta - another way to get to I-85 without having to bother with Hwy 54/74, you know because PTC owns that interchange and TDK will never exist - as if any of us want to commute through PTC to get to our jobs at Delta and/or downtown Atlanta.

2020? They need to pick it up a bit.
