Your favorite baseball player of all time

Kevin Wandra's picture

I'm a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and I could never imagine my favorite player coming from any other team. In the 1980's, Rickey Henderson and Don Mattingly were two of my favorite players, but I wouldn't say either is my favorite player of all time. That honor would probably have to go to current Yankees shortstop and future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter.

Who is your favorite baseball player of all time?

you're young and haven't had time to see a lot of great baseball players. I have seen 40 years worth, and a lot of great ones in that time.

What makes a great ball player is for most people more subjective than objective. Stat for stat seldom enters the equation. For example, had Babe Ruth had as many at bats as Hank Aaron, at the pace he hit homers, he would have sent approximately 1,145 out of the park, 390 more than Aaron. Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire did it with doped up muscles, so there is no objective way to compare them to others.

I saw Willie Mays make super outstanding plays for years, and I see Andruw Jones doing the same thing today. Subjectively, I will have to pick Willie over Andruw for now, waiting to see the final lifetime stats.

What a player and what a great person. When I went to the daytime Phillies games with my Dad (he knew Richie somehow) Richie would come over, talk to me and rub my head and make me feel like a million bucks.

Then he went out to Center field and led off batting and played great baseball.

Sure Barry Bonds has better stats, but Richie was (and I hope still is) the real deal. 50 years later I still remember how classy he was.

What can I say - in his time with the Red Sox David Ortiz has endeared himself to everyone. Every player should be as personable and dedicated to the team. If only he would rub off more on Manny.

Michael.... eat your heart out. I was at Fenway park last year when Papi broke the franchise home run record and then added an extra one on top of that. What a great night of baseball. Yup.... David Ortiz is truly a class act and a true sportsman. It's understandable why the fans love him so much. I do have to say that the Green Monster was a "true and pure" baseball experience.

I'll never forget his plays against Johnny Bench in the 1970 World Series. They called him "Hoover" for his miraculous plays at 3rd base.

He was also a good guy who loved the game.

I'll take him - steroid free – invented the head first slide, king of choke and poke – master of hit and run – golden glove scoop and gun. I will put the man up against anyone who ever played the game.

Bonds can juice up and that's fine – no problem. McGwire can juice himself sick – no problem - Sammy Sosa has corked bats - no problem - Rose bets on baseball - never AGAINST his team - as a manager - and he is banned from the game for life. He played honest -no juice and no tricks.

He is the best baseball player I have ever seen play the game. Not the most talented, not the biggest, fastest or best athlete - just the best pure baseball player this country has produced.

I can add no more except with all that happens around pro sports these days, what's the harm in a little legal wagering? Put the best to ever play the game in Cooperstown where he belongs.

Isn't it shameful what our politicians, celebrities and child molesters get away with every day? And they're still beating up poor ole Pete. Let's honor the man for what he did on the field. I've always thougt Pete should be held accountable and that he has. Good grief... enough is enough.
