Logsdon beats Brown in a landslide, 70% to 30%

Political newcomer Harold Logsdon rode widespread discontent with controversial Mayor Steve Brown to an old-fashioned political horse-whipping of the incumbent in Tuesday’s Peachtree City mayoral runoff election. The final unofficial tally with all local votes counted gave Logsdon 4,227 votes to Brown’s 1,806. That’s 70 percent for the challenger to the incumbent’s 30 percent.

The only “precinct” still untallied is the overseas armed forces absentee vote, which represents the 14th precinct. As of Tuesday night, only three uncounted absentee ballots had been received ahead of next Friday’s deadline.

Of Peachtree City’s 20,810 registered voters, 6,041 went to the polls, a turnout rate of 29 percent. (Eight ballots were cast which did not register for either candidate.)

Logsdon, who rose from linesman to accounting executive with BellSouth in Birmingham, Ala., before retiring to Peachtree City, received the fervent support of all the city’s living former mayors and a political action committee set up to oppose Brown two years ago.

Logsdon received 42 percent of the total votes cast in the mayor's race last month, compared to 22 percent for the incumbent Brown. Since none of the six challengers received a majority, the runoff Tuesday was mandated.

However, from the first advance runoff votes tallied Tuesday night within an hour of the polls closing, it was clear that Brown was headed toward defeat.

Logsdon will join two other political novices who won in the Nov. 8 election: Cyndi Plunkett and Steven Boone.

The only two holdovers on the City Council are Stuart Kourajian and Judi-Ann Rutherford, both elected two years ago.

The new council in January will lack significant city political experience; institutional memory will reside with two two-year veterans and a city manager who has less than three years on the job.

Yes, Cal there will be a lack of institutional experience on council (which is a very good thing) and on staff -which is a very bad thing and was caused by the candidate you endorsed for some reason - the child-mayor of Peachtree City. His first priority when he came into office was to get rid of anybody who had any experience with the old regime - Basinger, Williams, Faulkner, Bechette, Christian, DAPC, etc. That was a huge, expensive blunder from which the city will not recover for years. Good riddance to Brown.

Jim Eagle or eaglejim, we can agree, good job Cal. You have kept the voters interested enough to get over 29% of the registered voters to go to the polls, or in my case to vote absentee. I really enjoy this on line forum as it keeps me connected to Peachtree City on my nights out of town. I wish I was there now it is -1 in Chicago tonight.

Good night all,

Will a concession speech be forthcoming? Any reasonable, honorable and sincere person would not do less would he ?
Wait I guess I just answered my own question. No such speech should be expected.

Actually, I agree one should be made.

Yes, I agree, one should be made, but one was not. That does show the degree of class of the opponent. Its not like the phone # wasn't available to call, check the blogs, they all had Harold's cell #

Except when you lose the election, I guess, as the AJC reports calls to Steve Brown's house and cellphones went unreturned.

Not even a quick congratulations - I smell a controversy brewing... Smiling

Leave it to Steve to come up with something bizarre and off-the-wall. He won't accept defeat gracefully, I can guarantee you that. Grace and class are not in his vocabulary. Expect some fireworks before the end of his term and some more personal attacks at whoever he can blame for the loss.

Well, I guess Steve's blaming the "Grand" Tree for his loss! What a sore looser.

You know, in the old, old days a bunch of residents would have probably gotten together and chased him out of town, never to be seen again.
