Logsdon beats Brown in a landslide, 70% to 30%Tue, 12/06/2005 - 9:12pm

Political newcomer Harold Logsdon rode widespread discontent with controversial Mayor Steve Brown to an old-fashioned political horse-whipping of the incumbent in Tuesday’s Peachtree City mayoral runoff election. The final unofficial tally with all local votes counted gave Logsdon 4,227 votes to Brown’s 1,806. That’s 70 percent for the challenger to the incumbent’s 30 percent. The only “precinct” still untallied is the overseas armed forces absentee vote, which represents the 14th precinct. As of Tuesday night, only three uncounted absentee ballots had been received ahead of next Friday’s deadline. Of Peachtree City’s 20,810 registered voters, 6,041 went to the polls, a turnout rate of 29 percent. (Eight ballots were cast which did not register for either candidate.) Logsdon, who rose from linesman to accounting executive with BellSouth in Birmingham, Ala., before retiring to Peachtree City, received the fervent support of all the city’s living former mayors and a political action committee set up to oppose Brown two years ago. Logsdon received 42 percent of the total votes cast in the mayor's race last month, compared to 22 percent for the incumbent Brown. Since none of the six challengers received a majority, the runoff Tuesday was mandated. However, from the first advance runoff votes tallied Tuesday night within an hour of the polls closing, it was clear that Brown was headed toward defeat. Logsdon will join two other political novices who won in the Nov. 8 election: Cyndi Plunkett and Steven Boone. The only two holdovers on the City Council are Stuart Kourajian and Judi-Ann Rutherford, both elected two years ago. The new council in January will lack significant city political experience; institutional memory will reside with two two-year veterans and a city manager who has less than three years on the job. login to post comments |
