Poll-did your child's school require a stamped envelope for end of year report cards?

My child's middle school asked for a stamped envelope to have the end of year report card sent home. They also sold students the stamped envelopes at school the last week. Is this county-wide in Fayette? I paid $3700 in county taxes last year and I think the school system should get a share large enough to provide envelopes/postage for the end of year report cards.

FMS had to have an SASE, FCHS didn't.

My 8th grader had a Geometry test the last day of school, should I have complained about that?

High schools regularly mail grades home when a student is failing, so I guess postage is included in the budget.

This reminds me of the old saying: You have to pick your battles.

I know it's hard for you to believe but, even if the report cards could be sent home with the kids (and they can't in middle and high schools because of finals and final grades aren't ready on the last day of school), the kids who lost them or changed the grades on them or didn't bring them home at all would be the reason for complaint.

It would be "the fault of the schools" to some of the parents in this area who simply do NOT want their child held accountable or to take responsibility for anything. Thank gosh those type of parents are still in the minority.

Heck Git, they can't even be troubled to bring a stamp and an envelope without a complaint from GloriaG.

Of all the issues to discuss and our main issue is how report cards are to be delivered. I like IMNSHO's e-mail idea. If someone doesn't have e-mail then they can go by the FCBOE offices and sign for them there. I thought only old people like my parents refused to get e-mail. I probably opened up another can-o-worms with that one.

When I was in junior high (S. Florida in the early 70s) we had a grade of "E" which stood for "failure with effort."

By then, I didn't give a rip about school. I garnered more than a few of these. But I distinctly recall convincingly changing my grades of "E" to "B"--by adding small, handwritten loops onto the letters--before presenting the report cards to my parents. (I also had my dad's signature nailed, so that I had a plethora of "excused" absences due to every manner of human ailment. Ferris Bueller had nothing on me. Typically, this was to allow me to hit the surf rather than the books.)

Anyway (where was I going with this?) maybe a more direct link with the parents is not a bad idea.

In elementary, that was the norm, because the kids did not take tests in the final week of school. Not so in middle or high school.

However, it is not every school that is requiring the SASE from the students. Some do, some don't. RSMS does. SMHS doesn't.

And again, there was no other option given. How about getting the grades by email? Then you don't even have to "waste" paper.

My folks are in Cheyenne, Wyoming right now. They called yesterday to tell me they had to go buy sweatshirts and jackets because they didn't pack any, and were taken by surprise with the sudden dip in temperature. They're up there looking at various properties to possibly purchase, mainly to get away from all the over-devlopment and decline of our lovely Fayette County and state of Georgia.

Time magazine predicted this:

“Man, too, may be somewhat responsible for the cooling trend. The University of Wisconsin's Reid A. Bryson and other climatologists suggest that dust and other particles released into the atmosphere as a result of farming and fuel burning may be blocking more and more sunlight from reaching and heating the surface of the earth.

Whatever the cause of the cooling trend, its effects could be extremely serious, if not catastrophic.” Jun 24, 1974

Why should the taxpayers pay for an envelope and stamp so you can get your child's report card? You should have to pay for the services you are using.

Mixer's picture
Submitted by Mixer on Thu, 06/07/2007 - 4:29pm.

If 100% of your property tax was school tax, you would still be $4,183 short of paying your share of what Fayette County spends for just one child (your child) and $7,883 short for each and every other child you may have for each and every year. Of course, special needs kids and those involved in extra-curricular activities cost even more.

That's for every single year and that's if 100% of your $3,700 had gone to the school system (of course, it doesn't even come close).

So, if you had two children in Fayette County schools, you would be about $12,000 per year short or at least $144,000 per diploma or about $50,000 short if you just have the ONE child in the school system (again, that's assuming that ALL of your property tax goes to the school- which it obviously does not).

The 'stamp money' you were asked to contribute saves the school from buying the stamps for YOUR child's report card. The school can then use that money for teacher's supplies and clinic supplies for your children. You see, every school in Fayette County has a school nurse and needs supplies. This is NOT required by any law - it's just another way the schools here go above and beyond what is required in Fayette County.

You know, the option of driving up the the school to pick up your child's report card was always there for you as well.

You can also call the school and tell them you simply refuse to help buy your stamp for your child.

So, in summary, you don't even come close to paying your share of your child's education and yet you want to complain about the school asking you for a 'stamp' so they can mail to your front door, your own child's report card?

Perhaps you have forgotten why your property is valued so highly here in Fayette County and what the school system here does for your children?

Fayette County has a teacher shortage because they pay less than the surrounding counties do and if we can help them buy them a few items for their classroom by you donating a stamp for YOUR report card then GREAT.

Let me put this in perspective: I paid a little over $11,000 last year in local property taxes and have NO children in Fayette County Schools - sister can you spare a stamp?

You want us to buy the stamps additionally so your $11,000 dollars tax, on what must be in excess of a million in property, doesn't increase!
Public Schools are supposed to be free once the taxes are paid. This is to assure EVERYONE can go.
However, over the years buying or renting books has occurred, all kinds of fees have occured, band charges have occurred, and on and on.
NOW STAMPS. There will be no end--that is the problem.
Now, for the kicker: who do you think pays for the rest of the school costs that our county taxes do not pay? You? Very little.
Of course the state and federal does. With what? Our taxes!
You aren't fooling many, my friend.

After taxes are paid, public schools are supposed to be free? When did your children attend school? Apparently not within the last decade.

While my children attended elementary school, each year we received a list of supplies we were to send in: crayons, markers, blue pens, red pens, black pens, scissors, glue sticks, dry-erase markers (although during all my many hours of volunteering in the classrooms I Never saw a dry-erase board in the entire school), a set of 10 3-ring with pockets color-specific folders, index cards, a box of tissue, and a roll of paper towels (among more that I don't remember at this time). I fully expected "toilet tissue" to be on the list, too. On a side note: my Mom was a first grade teacher for over 30 years in another state and could not believe the supply lists our school gave to the parents each year, because her school didn't ask for anything except for paper towels and tissues.

If you can't afford all of the extras that come with kids stop having them. No one held a gun to your head and forced you to have kids. It was a choice you made on your own. The taxpayers don't owe you a free lunch, or stamps for that matter.

If that stamp is the margin between staying solvent or going bankrupt, you have more problems then the stamp. The band charges are because thats an extra activity, no one's required to take band. What do you think the taxes would be otherwise?

You know, the option of driving up the the school to pick up your child's report card was always there for you as well.

Actually, this was never offered as an option. We were told that we MUST send in (or buy) a SASE or our child would not get their report card.

So you are outraged that the school would ask for your help? Wow.

If you want to do what is 'fair', from a financial standpoint, you should be billed for your entire child's educational expenses and I should be refunded the portion of my local taxes that goes to the schools. Education is not a federal right nor is it in the Constitution. Your fair share in Fayette County is about $7,850 for each of your children per year. How many did you pay for?

No wonder no one wants to teach in Fayette County. They give you the best top to bottom public school system in the state and you gripe about helping the school by buying a SASE for your own kid. How can you complain about with a clear conscious?

I recall you were complaining about the principal using 'Ax' at the graduation for Starr's Mill. You keep cutting corners and complaining about being 'axed' to help be a part of the schools or to contributing a stamp and envelope and you won't be 'axed' to do anything in or anything 'wiff' the schools here soon enough.

If I recall correctly, and I nearly always do, Sticking out tongue County taxes pay for 50% of school expenditures, State funds pay for 49% of school expenditures and the Fed govt. kicks in less than 1% (prolly for those failed "Abstinence ONLY" sex ed programs). So county taxes of $3900 or so would pay the "share" of one kid.

As you know it is NOT. The QBE funding formula (the QBE contribution is actually about $2,362) is much more complex and designed to provide equal funding for all systems regardless of size or tax base. We can all it Half if you want though. You are correct about the federal funding being very small(about 7%) and for the sake of simplicity, let's just say the remainder of the $7800 is split 50/50. All of these assumptions are for funding a '1', a 'normal' kid with no special considerations.

www.gsba.com/downloads/FundingGaPublicSchools.ppt

Account of GloriaG:

With one child:

Gloria paid $3700 in property taxes.
If we allow 50% to the schools (as if) = $1,850 school tax
Gloria's fair share using your figures is $3,900

So Gloria is now over $2,000 short for the first kid and at least $3,900 for every other child - every year- even if you allow her the entire state contribution for each, every time, and for every child she puts through school.

Tell me again, why she shouldn't pay for her stamp and envelope for her child's report card to be sent to her house?
