Hutch, any memories of this?

The Tin Can Sailor

There's a roll and pitch and a heave and pitch
To the nautical gait they take,
For they're used to the cant of the quarterdeck's slant
As the white toothed combers break
On the plates that hum like a beaten drum
To the thrill of the turbines might,
As the knife bow leaps through the foamy deep
With the speed of a shell in flight.

Oh, their scorn is deep for the crews who keep
To the battleship's steady floor,
For they love the lurch of their own frail perch
At thirty-five knots or more.
They don't get much of the drill and such
That the battleship sailors do,
For they sail the seas in dungarees
A grey destroyer's crew.

They need not climb, at their sleeping time,
To a hammock that sways and bumps.
For they leap, ker-plunk to a cozy bunk
That quivers and bucks and jumps.
They hear the sound of the seas that pound
On the half inch plates of steel
And they close their eyes to the lullabies
Of the creaking sides and keel.

They're a lusty crowd that's vastly proud
Of the slim grey craft they drive.
Of the roaring flues and the humming screws
Which make Her a thing alive.
They love the lunge of Her surging plunge
And the murk of Her smokescreen too
As they sail the seas in their dungarees,
A grey destroyer's crew.

Outstanding poem, brings back the memories. When I saw your name I wondered if that was what it meant. OS2, DD866

Just found the poem on my 2nd DD's web site. Rode DD777 out of Norfolk and DDR808 out of Long Beach. Late 50s to 60. FT3.

Do you get the Tincan sailors newspaper? It's a very good publication. We needed another squid on this site, the flyboys and ground pounders had me outnumbered.

Yep,I belong to TCS. Been on here a while but generally just observe the crap that starts over any and all subjects. Learned to just skip about 50% of the posters since thay have nothing worthwhile to say. If I want a good arguemnt I can generally get that at home, in person.

You can read a real poem:

AN AIRMAN GRACE

Lord of thunderhead and sky
Who place in man the will to fly
Who taught his hand speed, skill and grace
To soar beyond man's dwelling place
You shared with him the Eagle's view
The right to soar, as Eagles do
The right to call the clouds his home
And grateful, through your heavens roam
May all assembled here tonight
And all who love the thrill of flight
Recall with twofold gratitude
Your gift of Wings, Your gift of Food.

— Father John MacGillivary, Royal Canadian Air Force

A Pilot’s Prayer

God, grant me
the eyes of an eagle,
the judgment of an owl,
the quickness of a hummingbird,
the reflexes of a cat,
the radar of a cave bat,
the heart of a bull, and
the balls of a Vietnam helicopter pilot.

All you had to do was tell them you could write too! You almost made it! I'll look out for you two guys at Starbucks. I know what kind of trouble you Navy guys can be when there are two or more of you together Eye-wink

On a related note: I have a friend who's son is going to the Naval Academy next year to play football. I tried to talk him in to going in to the the Air Force Academy but he just wouldn't listen.

When I told them I could write they wanted me to be in charge, it was to much responsibility at 18, so I went into the Navy, where we shot at planes.

Yes I meant 'Hack' and the Thunderbolt is an A-10 (same-same G.I., that much I do remember - I dodged a couple of those in my time. Those guys like to get close to the action - too close sometimes).

As for the Hutch/Hack, you four-letter-word guys that start with an 'H' all look alike to me Eye-wink

Here's a funny story involving pilots and officers, one day at sea we were working with the carrier Eisenhower and doing an anti-air warfare drill with a couple of jets. The jets were making runs at us and we were pretending to shoot them down, after declaring one of the jets shot down, he buzzed our ship about 100 feet off the deck, tremendous noise when that happens, our captain came running into the radar shack and asks "didn't we shoot him down?" and I had to tell him it was just pretend, with a straight face I might add.
