Starr's Mill

I will disagree with the writer saying that the SMHS graduation was a disgrace. It was a beautiful ceremony and if you really cared for the students you would no be saying those mean words. The SMHS principal is working very hard at turning that school around and making it an educational institution instead of a social club. Rules and standards must be in place to teach students responsibility and character. Many students demand grades from their teachers and if they do not get the grades they want they turn around and discredit their teachers. Is this the attitude and bullying that you want from our future leaders. Who ever you are you should be ashamed of your comments. Do you think that the principal doesn't already know that she stumbled a little. Have you ever tried to read in front of almost 1,000 people? Now, I know why there are so many rude students attending SMHS. Many do not respect their school or their teachers. Jealousy, ill competition, rudeness, lying and academic dishonesty is very common in this school. The principal is trying to fix this. If students and parents want to get A's and B's then they should earn their grade and not try to manipulate the system or try to intimidate their teachers. Instead of badmouthing this principal you should try and volunteer and be in the school day to day to see what really goes on in that academic institution. By you attacking this hard working, new principal you are attacking the teachers and everyone that is close to the school. Become a high school teacher so that you can actually see how teachers and administrators are treated by students and parents. I guarantee you that you would not take the abuse that they receive with a smile like they always do.

I am the one who originally wrote the blog complaining about the SMHS graduation, and especially about the principal. And I stand by my comments.

I am a SMHS parent. Have been for years, will be for several more years. Neither my kids nor I are part of the "social club" as you call it, nor are either of us demanding any particular grade from a teacher. Gee, maybe that's what I should've done instead of insisting that my kids work hard and pass their classes, since you seem to think that's what all the parents there are doing.

I don't think the new principal has done anything to improve the school, so far. I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt that she will, though, since it was her first year.

But as to her speech at the graduation - it was more than just stumbling over her words. She couldn't speak proper English when she wasn't stumbling. I wouldn't have said anything if she'd just stumbled over words. It was her lack of ability to speak PROPERLY (facuhty and ax) that was the worst.

I had a child graduate that night. As much as you have spoken to "others" who didn't think it was too long and was a good ceremony, I have spoken to "others" who agree with me on both the principal's speaking ability and the length and order of the ceremony.

So what's the point of continuing this discussion? I can, and I will if I feel like it, but right now... I'm done.

You sound like a good parent to me. Smiling

Next school year I'll have FCHS grandchildren, and a WHS grandchild!
All of them have friends at Starrs Mill. Oh, and one of my children graduated from McIntosh. This is going to be a hoot!
(we don't say ax either)

Also, my children are a Bulldog, a Yellow Jacket and a Gator!

I grew up with an 'ax' it was in front of the 'cent'.

We also had one to chop wood.

We even had a couple that were in front of the 'ident'.

We never told anyone to do it to us though (Ax me?!).

It's all in how you are raised - we used to say "whatchagonnado"? and "Fughettaboutit". Now we try to stay with "fixinto".

This is a good change, instead of all the politics and "fussin." Smiling

I spoke with some parents of students who just graduated from Starr Mills - and they were surprised that there had been such scurrilous complaints about the principals 'diction'. Naturally they were pleased with the recognition that the students received - and did not think the ceremony was too long. (Parents are like that!) With parental and community support for the school such as yours - the school will continue to be among the best if not the best in Fayette County!
