The Fayette County Public Library will honor Dr. Ferrol Sams, 84, on Saturday, June 16 with an old-fashion country picnic in honor of the release of his newest book.

Sams will give a brief talk about the book, entitled “Down Town,” which will be available for purchase and signing from 1-4 p.m.

The celebration, which will be held on the library lawn and in the social hall, will include hot dogs, chicken, and much more, plus live entertainment by Jhelisa Anderson. It is free and open to the public.

When asked about his new book, Sams piques one’s interest by simply saying, with a smile in his voice, “I had a lot of fun writing it.”

The event is sponsored by the Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.

The Fayette County Public Library is located at 1821 Heritage Park Way in Fayetteville.

For additional information, please contact the library at 770-461-8841.

Memo to Citizen staff: If you're gonna use Sambo in a headline these days you might wanna explain that it is actually a family nickname for the esteemed Dr. Sams. But my advice: unless it's relevant, leave it out entirely.

Get over it. That's the good doctor's nickname, and I'm glad they printed it. The small minds that look to find racism in every little thing need to get a life.

Memo to the Citizen Staff: no problem here. However, I did click on the article initially hoping it would be something else. I wonder if they'll have watermelon?

Spoken like a true racist redneck. Don't you have some cows to 'tip' today?

in Fayette County knows it's 'SAMBO', not just a family nickname, either.

I have been seeing SAMBO for colds and flu since I came to this county over 30 years ago. It was SAMBO then and it's SAMBO now.

Time to get over the politically correct crap, it's SAMBO, dammit.

Been here 15-plus myself. Never heard it. (Had to google to find out it was a nickname.) Maybe I should hang out at Melear's more so I can pick up on all the local culture.

Anyway, it's just crappy newspapering to put a nickname in a headline and assume all your readers will "get it" with no explanation needed. That the nickname is a word with potentially racist connotations makes it that much worse. {{{EDITED}}}
