Community Christian Church in Fayetteville is beginning a discussion group for persons who would like to engage in dialogue and debate regarding matters of faith, organized religion, the role or lack of religious belief in American life and other issues relating to the views of religious believers and skeptics.

The discussion group is called “Seekers and Skeptics” and is open to anyone 18 years or older who wants to engage in an honest, open sharing of ideas about the role of faith and religion in their lives.

The first group meeting will be Saturday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 349 Kenwood Road, Fayetteville.

The Rev. Jim Lindskoog, minister at Community Christian Church, stated that the group was formed in response to what appears to be a growing divisiveness both within various religious groups and between those who affirm a belief in God and those who do not.

Lindskoog added that many individuals have questions about their faith, the meaning of organized religion for their lives or seek a better understanding of religious beliefs different from their own.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “they find too many religious discussions end up with little more than defending a particular, personal viewpoint with little willingness to even listen to another perspective.”

Lindskoog said it is not the purpose of “Seekers and Skeptics” to try to convert anyone. Rather, it is an attempt to provide an open forum for discussion of differing viewpoints regarding the role of faith and religion, or lack of it, in the lives of those who come to participate. The discussion group is open to persons who have a strong religious faith, questions about their faith, or those who choose to live without the underpinning of religious faith.

Community Christian is on Kenwood Road, just west of the intersection of Kenwood and Ga. Highway 314. For more information, call the church office, 770-460-9745, or Lindskoog’s cell phone, 404-323-4719. The church also has a Web site, http://fayettedisciples.googlepages.com/.

Interesting...maybe a place to discuss the justifiedigression of the church from a mandate to serve the poor and the voiceless to social clubs and entertainment centers. The 21st century church has migrated from an injustice denouncing standpoint to conformism to the established powers. I might show up with my little face to these discussions...
