Challenge to Fayette County

Let's have a seminar for the entire community given by law enforcement entitled: "How citizens can help prevent crime and identify criminals in Fayette County." It is disingenuous to challenge the NAACP, when organizations supposedly representing the Christian community, the 'white' community, the 'male' community - are not being challenged with the same issue when their 'members' are involved in criminal actions. The description of the suspect in the Dollar General store robbery fits almost every light-skinned black (or hispanic,or east indian, or asian, or 'white' with a tan) male on the street! We need to learn to be more descriptive - so that law enforcement can catch these criminals. I hope that Fayette County residents don't fall into the 'race-baiting' trap that will hinder the apprehension of the criminal element on our streets. Who would you look for if the description stated the suspect is a white male, about 20 years old, wearing a green jacket? If the suspect took off the green jacket - law enforcement would have to stop just about every other male on the street. Concerned citizens can be trained to be more observant. We can make this county the LAST PLACE a 'thug' would want to enter - if we all accept the challenge of keeping our streets and businesses safe.

It's not a class of people that we should be looking out for. Its their actions. If someone does something suspicious, like, approaching you at a gas station for money, wouldn't that raise your awareness just a little?
It doesn't matter if someone is black, white, brown, red or green. If they are doing something that would NOT be normal in a situation, then watch out! Thats what the F.B.I. calls a clue! Two males walking up to you in a parking lot, though matter what time of day or where your at, SHOULD, send out some type of warning sign. Guess what, if your wrong, then no harm done. If your right, then you have a better chance of defending yourself.
These dirtbag criminals DEPEND on us being stupid and over confident that we are safe. Fayette Citizens looking out for fellow citizens IS the answer to a lot of these issues. I for one, never look down upon someone calling for the "LAW" to check out suspicious activity. Thats what they are here for. A little more of that would do wonders to stop crime here in our county.

I shared my 'idea' with a lawenforcment officer (not from Fayette County) - and citizens would need training and guidelines for using 911 to report suspicious activity. It is advisable for the county to set up another 'hotline' for reporting 'suspicious activity' so that the important use of 911 for emergency situations is not compromised. (Criminal activity in progress - etc.) Does Fayette County have such a 'hotline'? Where would 'newcomers' get this information? Knowledgeable use of cell phone cameras by citizens have been a great help to law enforcement. A 'picture' is better than a verbal description. Just think - would a 'thug' feel comfortable if everyone in line at the movie theater pulled out their cell phone - and clicked it? Hmmmmmm. Hanging around Tinseltown's parking lot 'dealing' would not be so attractive!

Any "hotline" like you are talking about would probably ring into the same place that your 911 phone call goes to, which is the Communications Center. They dispatch for all the agencies in the county (and the cities) from there -- 5 law enforcement agencies, and 3 fire/EMS agencies.

There is a number you can call besides 911, to report suspicious activity or for anything else you need police/fire assistance with, but don't want to call 911. That number is 770-461-HELP(4357). It also rings into the Communications Center.

None of our law enforcement agencies will take a report over the phone (and that is a good thing.) So if you want to report suspicious activity, you'll need to be willing to have an officer meet with you.

I do wish I knew what you meant.
What do you intend to do if two men walk up to you in a parking lot?
You don't mean if you see two across the lot who look bad to you that you start screaming or call the police on them, do you?
Man, you scare me!

Dollar, I never said anything about calling 911 everytime you see something suspicious. What I meant was to BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. I also said that is was Okay to call when something appeared suspicious. Dollar, I really don't see how you could have misunderstood what I was getting at. You know, we could just remain the same. You know, don't call the police when we think we need them and leave our destiny up to chance.
If that scares you, then simply don't call. Heck, its just a suggestion. I know from experience that citizens see strange things all the time out here. Some of it IS criminal activity and they just don't know what it is they are watching. Unless you are in law enforcement, it is a little harder to pick up on the signs.
I used to sit in the Home Depot parking lot and watch crime being committed right out in the open. Back in 1998, in a marked patrol unit, I arrested about 16 people in one month doing that. These idiots would pull up in front of the lawn mowers, cut the wire securing them and then would drive off. The same goes for entering autos.
The "Law" can never compare to or compete with good citizen observations. We have to work together. I hope that I have explained myself Dollar.

I don't know if we do "town meetings" in this area but it would
be something that I would attend if the topic of crime was discussed.

-reserved for something more clever to say

Useless meetings. Just a way to socialize and let off steam and show off.
Somewhat like all those little shows on the evening news channels in Atlanta about bubba getting shot, or just look at my stuff thrown out on the street!
