Falwell FalloutJerry Falwell has been dead for a few days now, and after a suitable period of navel gazing, the reviews of his life and achievements have begun trickling in. Bottom line: despite massive hate radio and conservative columnist efforts to re-cast the Reverend Falwell as a pious man of God, many (if not most!) average Americans recognize and eulogize Falwell for what he was...a narrow-minded hate-filled bigot. The right-wing media has predictably used Falwell's death to chatter long and hard about purported liberal intolerance of Falwell's intolerance, which strikes me as a trifle disingenious. The right wing natters on about the good that Falwell did, he started a mission for alcoholic men, yada yada yada. The best reply I heard to answer this misdirection ploy: "Serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer undoubtedly did some good things for someone in his life, as well. That, however, is not for what he will be remembered for." Amen! Some random reading from newspapers across the nation for your Sunday morning pleasure! GOP notables to miss Falwell rites (Hey the Lt. Gov. of Virginia is coming, though!) Many people across this country have come to bury Jerry Falwell, not to praise him.
