Paging ArmyMajorRetired

Basmati's picture

Major, I'd like to ask your professional opinion on a story that is in all the papers today.

Click here for NY Times report

At first glance, it appears like this is straight out of the end of "Saving Private Ryan".

Three troops in a vastly understaffed platoon were given a Humvee and told to hold a bridge in Iraq. They were told to stand guard for 24 to 36 hrs straight. They had virtually no cover and very little ammunition. Their "rapid response team" fire support was almost 1/2 hour away by road.

The three soldiers were overwhelmed, killed and their bodies booby-trapped.

Battalion command recommended a written reprimand for both the company CO and platoon CO, the Division commander overruled his battalion CO and sacked both the company commander and the platoon commander.

What is your take on things?

We better not put underwear on their heads or humiliate them. That would raise the ire of the liberal media and the Democrats!

We better also get them a good lawyer and three Muslim approved meals and nice carpet to kneel on when they face Mecca five times a day or the ACLU and the Pelosi Patrol will protest. Of course their medical and dental work better be up to par. This is all assuming we are able to catch them of course. With nearly 500,000 less troops than Bill Clinton inherited it will be hard.

And Harry Reid says we 'Lost' the war.

Gee, I wonder why we are not in control over there yet.

What a CONCISE assessment of the situation. I'd laugh if this wasn't so true.

I always enjoy your political analyses. You managed to work in no less than five Republican talking points in less than three paragraphs. Denise Cockroach could learn from your compact stylings.

Having said that, I was looking for more of a military analysis of what went wrong there. Got any trenchant commentary regarding the military aspect of the situation?

"Denise Cockroach could learn from your compact stylings."

Delightful Denise, remember!

But if I wrote like Mixer, then there wouldn't be the need for both of us. I celebrate diversity!

"trenchant" -- Good word choice because Mixer is definitely forceful and effective! Laughing out loud

You might want to remember that a !cockroach! is virtually indestructible and very prolific for so "compact" a creature and even a respected published author, despite the physical limitations! Laughing out loud

Excellent mothers (the Gromphadorhina portentosa variety), too

I've even heard that The Cockroaches have some musical ability, with an Aussie flavor.

Or are you referring to the film stars ? Laughing out loud

Hissssssssssss!

I would have been closer to being a part of that "rapid response team" you mention when I served.

I never held a bridge, or any other landmark or high value real-estate marker.

I can't find the article you linked to and your summary is just too little information to attempt to second guess the field command.

I like Denise by the way. You should not be intimidated by her. If I wasn't married and she wasn't so good looking and so smart.... who knows - I might be able to trick her in to dinner.

Say bas, do you happen to work at the court house?

What am I gonna do with you?

Lombardi's has some excellent pizza but I try to stay out of SoHo.

I'll be in NYC next Tuesday so I'll make a pilgrimage to John's Time Square Pizza. If I can figure out my new camera phone I'll take a picture for ya.

And Rolex watches. Those counterfeits can pay for your whole trip and it is Graduation season Eye-wink

Regardless, Lombardi's is so worth the trip - and you know it- or at least you SHOULD. (Although I got a $105 parking ticket there last time I was there for parking while Georgian).

*laughing* the last time I was on Mott street was the day after the movie "The Incredible Hulk" came out. I was amazed to see a bootleg copy of the movie one day after release, so I paid 5 bucks for it.

Turns out this slickly packaged DVD was someone who'd used a camcorder to record the movie in a movie theater!

Have you ever gotten a DVD with Chinese & other Asian sub-titles?

After looking closely at the cover, I noticed quite a few misspellings Smiling and other inaccuracies. The quality was OK, but I got the $ back and told the "retailer." He just couldn't see the problems, though, & continued to claim that it was an original.

.... and troops died. Nothing is new there. War is heck bas.

I'm glad they removed and punished the command responsible for this unfortunate lapse in leadership.

Speaking of leadership failures, are you familiar with:
'Operation Eagle Claw'?

I know what you mean but when I see references to Operation Eagle Claw it seems to me to be a slap at Col. Charles Beckwith and the Delta Forces. Can I ask you please to skip just the reference without elaboration. I'm not saying its not fair game but either stick with the hostages or somehow put in a note exculpating those who are not your target. Thanks, Jeff

I have a unique and close personal perspective on Operation Eagle Claw. (Desert Two specifically.)

Like two other men I know of from here, I was there. I even got a cute little medal that I have on my wall. I even showed it on here a few times in the past.

As I have told you before, I was a member of the USAF 5th Combat Com Group and sent from Hurlbert Field to participate in this exercise (along with others from the 1st Combat Com Group).

With all due respect, I feel the failure was at a much higher level than with Charlie Beckwith.

If this is Bush's war, wasn't it Carter's rescue attempt?

it's you and your anti-conservative rants. See Drupal is secretly developed by Haliburton and managed by none other than Dick Cheney and there is code in it that tries to block the talking points from DU members. Smiling

Actually it's not Drupal's fault. Drupal is excellent open source software. The real problem is thecitizen.com's web server hiccupping occasionally.
