PTC Council says 'not so fast' to speed barriers

The speed bumps in the Planterra Ridge subdivision will stay just a bit longer.

The Peachtree City Council tabled a proposal to replace them with "speed cushions" which are less intrusive, moving vehicles just three inches off the ground. Council directed city staff to get data on the speed of vehicles in the subdivision and other information before making a final decision.

The projected cost of installing the speed cushions is about $18,000 in city funds and a like amount from the subdivision's homeowners association.

I have to drive over 9 speed bumps to exit via Hwy 54 and 5 to go out Kelly Green. This is overkill. I have not found one single neighbor who likes having them in the neighborhood. the traffic counts are down. I say pull them up ( just like some modern day Robin Hood has done several times in the past). My shocks and springs will be grateful...

This is really dumb. With those mountains in Planterra, does Council think people are speeding through the subdivision??? That's not possible to do without tearing your vehicle apart. Way to waste city staff's time and resources, gathering meaningless data that will obviously change if the type of "traffic calming device" is changed. DUH!

I'm not an expert on this matter by any means, I was only at last night's meeting to cover for a colleague for a bit, but this is what I gathered.

Planterra asked for the speed bumps when people were cutting through there all the time due to all the construction on 54. The speed bumps slowed some people down and reduced the amount of traffic cutting through - now that the construction is over, people are cutting through even less and now some residents are taking up the speed bumps. But, some residents are still worried and want the speed bumps or something like them to stay. This group and some members of the city recommended speed cushions - city council decided last night to look at things some more because the traffic numbers are down to pre Wal-Mart numbers and there is a chance that less speed cushions than the amount that the Homeowner's Association and several staff members are asking for would do the trick and there is also a possibility that they might not be needed at all.

All I'm saying is don't attack the council, they were very reasonable on the matter - as far as I could tell.

Considering what the present traffic barriers do to response times in emergencies for Fire and Police, they never should have been installed, regardless of cut through traffic to avoid 54/74. That's the place for Council to tell the citizens "sorry, but what you want isn't what you really want and you're not getting it."

Past councils had to deal with a similar issue in the Flat Creek area and obviously this council didn't learn anything from that experience. First you had some of the residents all gung-ho for speed bumps...oh wait, those are too big...no, those are too small.....wait, there needs to be more....hey, I live on this road and am now sick of driving over speed bumps to get into my driveway....Fiasco.

Having any kind of traffic study on Terrane Ridge is a waste of time. A 3rd grader can tell you that traffic right now is going slower than ever before due to the speed barriers installed right now. Same student could also tell you that since the completion of 54 widening, cut through traffic is lower. Does Council(or anyone else) expect a study that shows
a) More cut through traffic dude to 54 widening
b) Faster speeds due to speed barriers being installed

a "study" is simply a way to put-off having to make a decision that Council knows is going to make some people unhappy. As the Flat Creek hub-bub illustrated, there are going to be unhappy people no matter what you decide. A study won't change that fact, especially when you can't compare this study to any done pre-54 widening.

As I said, I'm not an expert - other than reading what John Munford reports, I am not involved in city meetings, etc. It sounded like there were parts of the road, most especially a straight-away - where excessive speed was common, but while the traffic numbers were down, the speeds through the area were either the same or above average.

The emergency response time thing came up with the speed cushion discussion too and while fire trucks would have no problems, police cruisers and ambulances would be slowed.

You can debate the speeds on Terrane Ridge or anywhere else in Planterra but, the fact is that given the opportunity there are too many speeders in "ALL" the residential neighborhoods. Planterra is getting press because of the traffic added during construction of 54. I don't have construction in my neighborhood but, the speeders are still here! I certainly don't have a solution but, maybe, it starts with you and me!
