Fayette shoots down gun ban in parks

Fayette County’s plan to outlaw firearms in the county’s recreation areas is losing steam quickly.

Last week, the county pulled it from the Thursday night agenda. Commission Chairman Jack Smith said it was a “staff error” and should have instead appeared on a Wednesday workshop agenda. The issue came to the board after a recommendation from the Recreation Committee.

But the real reason for the abrupt pulling of the item may have been the pressure exerted by georgiacarry.org, a gun-rights advocacy group that is currently in litigation with Coweta County over a similar ordinance.

In an email from Commissioner Eric Maxwell to the gun-rights’ group attorney John Monroe, Maxwell indicates the measure has little chance of being approved by the County Commission.

“The County Administrator has emailed me and indicated that the ‘weapons’ ordinance has been taken off the agenda for tomorrow. I believe that the chairman will simply state that, ‘The item has been removed from the agenda.’ I do not anticipate any discussion (but you never know). I have personally spoken with two other commissioners that are against the proposed ordinance (I am opposed as well) so I see no way that the ordinance would pass. If this thing heats up I will get you involved, hopefully before it makes the papers this time. I do want to say thank you for your diligent monitoring of our Second Amendment,” wrote Maxwell.

The commission has not yet set a date when the issue will be further discussed.

I'm confused, WHY is this an issue?? I have two kids playing on rec. teams and see absolutely no reason why this measure should not be passed. I really feel much better knowing that firearms are not allowed in recreation areas. Commissioners: Why are you so concerned over potential litigation on this, and disregard it during land use and variance discussions on a constant basis??? This is very concerning at this particular time, because there was a threat made during a recreation league game on Fayette fields...and the opposing team was from...can you guess?...Coweta. But, I really do appreciate you expressing your concern for our kids by allowing this ordinance to remain in limbo. Get off your butts, work with the lawyers on wording, and get firearms out of the recreation areas, you bunch of scared idiots!

The bad guys don't pay any attention to laws and ordinances... that's why they're called "CRIMINALS".

It's only the law abiding citizens that are hurt by these restrictive ordinances.

If something bad ever really happened, you'd be thanking the person with a legal carry permit stepping in and possibly averting a bad situation.

The police can't be everywhere immediately. Criminals love places where it's illegal for decent folks to carry weapons. It makes their job easier. The threat that someone "else" may be armed is, in many instances, enough to make the bad guys rethink their plan.

Think about it logically, not emotionally.

Thanks Commissioner Maxwell !!!

I always here about how citizen Dan is going to stop the bad guys.
Anyone have any real evidence to back this claim up?
Just curious.

Yes, there are thousands of actual occurrences of crime being averted and even stopped by law abiding citizens with carry permits. The problem is normally related to the news media not printing these stories nor the broadcast media reporting on them.
Since it's timely, here's an article you might enjoy reading where a criminal was stopped by two armed students at Appalachian School of Law back in 2002.

Here is a whole list of instances where legally armed citizens

(sorry, you'll have to cut and past these links into your browser)

There are many, many more that happen almost every day. If the bad guy suspects you're armed, chances are nothing will happen.

Thanks for the correction.
While the first link comes from a Foxish website, which is fine (fair and balanced, wink wink). The other comes from a site with "nra" in the site name, that's about as unbiased as the GRTL's "pro-life vs pro-choice" advertisement I see on thecitizen.com's website.

If you'd taken the time to review the websites I provided, you'd find that the first link is from the Christian News Service, not Fox. It relates a news story originally issued by the Associated Press, not exactly your typical "conservative" news agency.

Second, if you'd reviewed the stories on the NRA website, you would have seen that each was referenced to an actual newspaper article. They just happened to collect stories and publish them. i.e., not contrived nor biased, just facts.

While I don't have the time (nor patience) to educate you on how to do proper research (or spell), I'll close by saying this. When you face danger, your first line of defense, is yourself.

Absolute poppycock.

The idea that the rest of we American citizens want to be protected by or anywhere near the "Clint Eastwood" wannabees of the world is absurd.

Some of you live in some alternative USA which is always scarey and where everyone better be armed and a quick draw or we will all be sorry.

I have lived a long life. I have never owned a gun. I have lived in small towns in the midwest, major cities, and now Fayette County. I have many friends and relatives and only one or two own a gun. None of use go out into the world thinking we are likely to be gunned down or attacked in some way. We know that this can happen but the odds are actually pretty small.

Like most people, we use common sense and avoid obviously dangerous places. Obviously dangerous places do not include college classrooms, employer's parking lots, or public parks in the daytime. The idea that some of you want come to those places armed and prepared to shoot the bad guys scares me to death.

Fayette County has one of the lowest crime rates in Georgia. We pay taxes for law enforcement. We do not need any of you who apparently think you are part of a "well regulated militia" to protect us.

Read a headline every now and again.

Philadelphia: Teen 'afraid every day' as gun violence soars

"You don't know what's going to happen," he said. "You don't know if you're walking in the neighborhood and a guy from middle school sees you and he just had a bad incident with his mother and father and he's walking around with a gun."

"I'm afraid every day."

Philadelphia is just one of the nation's cities trying to deal with a murder spike. As of Wednesday, 150 people have been slain in the city, compared to 140 by this time last year.

The numbers put Philadelphia on a pace well ahead of a bloody 2006, when 406 people were slain by others in the so-called City of Brotherly Love. It was the first time homicides topped the 400 mark since 1990. (Watch a mother grieve over a son shot for his car )

Nationally, violent crime is spiking, too.

FBI data from December, the most recent statistics available, show murders and robberies rose by 3.7 percent nationwide during the first six months of 2006.

Those findings came on top of a 2.2 percent crime hike in 2005 -- the first increase since 2001.

If you think you're safe, try reading this.
Report: Atlanta more dangerous than statistics indicate

Iraq Has a Lower Violent Death Rate Than Washington, Baltimore or Atlanta
And yes, I considered the source before posting it.

I'm not out to protect the whole world, just my little piece of it.

Like it or not, lion, you’re safer in your own house because the majority of Americans believe in the constitutional right to own guns. If it was left to gutless wonders like you who always just “…use common sense and avoid obviously dangerous places” (in other words “let the thugs roam where ever they want, accost whomever they want, and have what ever they want”) there wouldn’t be anyplace that was not an obviously dangerous place.

Maybe you should move to a safe-haven like New York City or Washington, D.C. where restrictions make it almost impossible to own a hand gun. That way you wouldn’t have to live in crime-plagued Fayette County where all those scaredy-cat law-abiding citizens own guns and have carry permits. Can you see a connection there?

I've also lived a long life and never owned a gun. Never had a need for one, either. I understand that there's a certain segment of society that is afraid of their own shadow and somehow feels comforted (maybe "more powerful" is a better term) at the thought of owning a gun, but I've never felt that way.

My personal opinion is that more guns in public would result in more accidental shootings (calm down, people, I am quite sure that all of you posting here have exemplary firearm safety records and have never once drawn a firearm in anger).

If people feel more empowered at the thought of being able to timely respond to the one-in-a-million nutcase by having access to a handgun, I'm okay with that. But I don't think the government should encourage the use of handguns in public situations, either.

Queue the "but...but...the CRIMINALS!" responses! Laughing out loud

These guys don't want everyone to be able to carry a gun. They aren't that stupid.
They only want to be able to carry one and to be excused if they mis-use it.
Nuts that didn't have a gun would be taking them away from teachers and everyone else when they wanted one.
We would be back to the days of duels and possees.
These guys just want to talk about guns. They wouldn't scare anybody off!

Why Wayne? He was a draft dodger, and a vile man!

Submitted by 30YearResident on Thu, 05/17/2007 - 11:28am.

.... John Wayne did not serve in World War II, though he was within draft age (34), At the time of Pearl Harbor, he was classified 3-A (deferred for family dependency), he had four children) and later 2-A (deferred in the national interest).

My father was 36 at the time of Pearl Harbor and was given a family deferrment as well. So he was never really a "draft dodger".

Can't you recognize a light hearted response? And of course I was referring to the JW persona and image, not the actual person ... GEEZ!

Wow. ”Obviously dangerous places do not include college classrooms, employer's parking lots, or public parks in the daytime.

I bet the students at Virginia Tech wish that their teachers would have been armed. The last two homicides in Fayette County were both in an employee parking lot (ex-wife killed her ex-husband in PTC, and a business partner on partner of a tree service). As for the public parks in the daytime – maybe the next drug deal will be there instead of the Pavillion or a grocery store on 74 (maybe they will carjack you to get away).

Have you ever heard that " ...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Its a little piece of work called the second amendment to the United States Constitution.)

As for me- I carry a .40 cal S&W semi-automatic because I will not be a victim.

Gun slingers? That’s amusing.

So tell me ptcmom, who is going to pay attention to another gun ordinance, those with bad intentions or those who have a legal right to carry a concealed weapon? Do you really want the only person with a gun at your kid’s game to be the nut job leisurely walking around shooting kids, or would you prefer that a law-abiding citizen also be armed? Any thinking person, of course, would prefer the latter. Unfortunately, fyi, it is already illegal under Georgia code to carry a gun, even with a permit, to a sporting event or gathering such as your son’s soccer game. The new ordinance would just make it illegal at any time, even if a person with a permit was walking alone through the park at midnight.

People like you are why thugs and whack-jobs don’t worry too much about getting their brains blown out. They know where they can go to do their business without worrying about the good guys shooting back.

Have a clue about current laws before you go whining for more.

Why is there such a shortage of common sense.

Can you imagine two thugs in a stolen car snorting cocaine, planning a home invasion, roberry/rape and then one of them says "We better not bring or use a gun, it's illegal"?

When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.
